Gatorade Signs As First Lead Sponsor For Jr. NBA World Championship Tournament

By Barry Janoff

June 26, 2018: NBA partner Gatorade has signed as the first primary partner for the premiere Jr. NBA World Championship, a tournament for elite 13- and 14-year-old boys and girls teams worldwide.

The NBA is planning to add other partners, including from its existing roster of marketing alliances.

Dwayne Wade (Miami Heat) and Candace Parker (Los Angeles Sparks) are official Jr. NBA World Championship ambassadors.

Fox Sports recently signed a multi-year deal to broadcast Jr. NBA World Championship games, beginning with 16 games during the 2018 Finals to air on Fox and FS1.

Regional competition began in May.

Playoffs will take place at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. beginning Aug. 7, with the boys and girls finals scheduled for Aug. 11-12.

Gatorade said it would build on its existing partnership with the NBA, WNBA and NBA G-League.

(Beginning with the 2017-18 season, the NBA Development League became the NBA G League as part of a multi-year expanded partnership between the NBA and Gatorade.)

As part of the partnership, Gatorade will be able to use Jr. NBA World Championship marks in multi-media marketing and promotion of products.

In addition, Gatorade will be included on the Jr. NBA World Championship Web site, in select Jr. NBA World Championship marketing and promotional materials and on courtside rotational signage at the World Championship event.

Among other activation, Gatorade will support the event’s off-court programming, including “Gatorade Sports Science Institute athlete testing and heat safety and hydration sessions with professional athlete speakers.”

The NBA said that the  Jr. NBA World Championship would promote four core values: Teamwork, Respect, Determination and Community.

“The Jr. NBA World Championship represents another significant step in our effort to promote youth basketball globally,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said when the event was unveiled earlier this year.

“In addition to high-level competition on the court, participants will learn from NBA and WNBA veterans and coaches the values of the game and the most appropriate training techniques.”

“The Jr. NBA World Championship represents another significant step in our effort to promote youth basketball globally."

“We jumped at the opportunity to partner with the NBA on this unique event,”  Mark Silverman, President, National Networks at Fox Sports, said in a statement.  “The NBA’s stars of tomorrow — the next Dwyane Wade or Candace Parker — might get their first big turns in the spotlight with us, right here at Fox Sports.”

The event will also align with the NBA and USA Basketball Youth Guidelines aimed at “improving the way children, parents and coaches experience the game, with a specific emphasis on promoting player health and wellness and age-appropriate rules and standards.”

In addition to the U.S., the Jr. NBA World Championship will include teams from eight international regions: Africa & Middle East, Asia Pacific, Canada, China, Europe, India, Mexico, and South America.

There are more than 70 countries and 32 teams involved.
