Report: At $138B And Counting, Gaming Has Become 'The World’s Favorite Pastime'

By Barry Janoff

June 25, 2018: China is a major player in world politics, finances, travel and consumer goods, and in total global game revenues, as well.

Global game revenue is expected to hit $137.9 billion, with China predicted to have $37.9 billion in game revenue, No. 1 in the world.

Digital revenue will account for 91% of the global market.

“Gaming has evolved into an all-around entertainment phenomenon. If you add up all playing and viewing hours, gaming is the world’s favorite pastime,” according to the just-released 2018 Global Games Market Report from research, marketing and consulting firm Newzoo, San Francisco.

Including such countries as Japan ($19.2 billion), South Korea, Australia and Taiwan, the Asia-Pacific region will generate $71.4 billion in 2018, or 52% of total global game revenues,

The $137.9 billion figure is up more than $100 million from 2007 ($35 billion) and up more than 13% from last year’s $121.7 billion.

Global game revenue is seen continuing to grow year over year, to an estimated $151.9 billion in 2019, $165.9 billion in 2020 and more than $180 billion in 2021.

Revenue in China alone is expected to reach $50.7 billion in 2021.

“Growth in the coming years will cement Asia-Pacific as the largest region by game revenues, as the fastest-growing markets in the coming three years will be India and various countries in Southeast Asia,” according to Newzoo.

The U.S. is second behind China (and ahead of Japan), with a predicted $30.4 billion in game revenue this year, with North America the second-largest region at $32.7 billion, accounting for 23% of the global games market.

That figure is up 10% over 2017, according to Newzoo.

The Top Ten nations by global gaming revenue in 2018 also include South Korea ($5.6 billion), Germany ($4.7 billion), U.K. ($4.5 billion), France ($3.1 billion), Canada ($2.3 billion), Spain (42 billion) and Italy ($2 billion).

Mobile gaming will be the largest segment in 2018, claiming more than half of all global game revenues for the first time.

“Combined, smartphone and tablet gaming will generate $70.3 billion, accounting for 51% of the total global market,” according to the 2018 Global Games Market Report. “The segment also has the most players with 2.2 billion, the majority of whom are gaming on smartphones.

In addition, NewZoo said that the gaming industry “is in a healthy state as both console and PC games are also growing.”

Console is the second-largest segment with predicted revenues of $34.6 billion in 2018.

The report said that figure would grow to $39 billion in 2021.

The overall PC segment will generate $32.9 billion in 2018 and is the third-largest segment.

However, growth in downloaded/boxed PC games is offset by declining browser PC revenues, as browser gamers have largely transitioned to mobile.

“Browser PC revenues will continue to decline to $2.5 billion in 2021” according to Newzoo.

As for what is still come in the category.

“As we look toward the future, we foresee games playing an increasingly impactful role in disrupting and reshaping traditional industries, from implementing individual game mechanics to an array of mergers and acquisitions crossing the boundaries of traditional industries,” according to Newzoo.
