Hanes Puts 30th Anniversary Michael Jordan Trading Card Collection In Its Underwear

By Barry Janoff

March 11, 2019: People usually send cards to a person or place celebrating an anniversary.

HanesBrand is doing the opposite, celebrating its anniversary with Michael Jordan by sending out cards to people.

In 1989, Jordan was in his fifth year with the Chicago Bulls and had not yet won his first of six NBA championships.

He also signed a deal with Hanes that is on-going, with the brand and its most famous spokesperson now celebrating their 30th anniversary with a multi-media effort covering retail, collectibles and March Madness.

According to Hanes, beginning this week, more than 800,000 specially marked bonus packs of Hanes men’s underwear will contain a pack of 30th anniversary Michael Jordan trading cards.

A total of 170 different Fleer trading cards have been produced by Upper Deck, with whom Jordan has an exclusive autograph deal (and which this year is also celebrating its 30th anniversary).

Each card will feature a picture of Jordan from one of his Hanes advertisements on the front and “vital statistics and fun facts on the back.”

Hanes said that the cards have been inserted randomly in five-card packs.

What consumers and collectors will most want: Ten of the randomly inserted cards have been autographed by Jordan.

A limited number of bonus packs with trading cards are available on the Hanes Web site and across all retail channels, with in-store special displays with visuals of the cards as such retailers as Kohl’s, JC Penney, Walmart, Meijer, Kmart and Dollar General.

TV spots supporting the promotion, anniversary and new Hanes product will air during March Madness on CBS, TBS, TNT and TruTV; as well as on ESPN, CBS Sports, FX, MTV/MTV2, ION and other cable stations.

“Michael has always had his pick of brands to endorse, and we are incredibly honored that he has chosen to stay with ours for the past three decades,” Sidney Falken, chief branding officer for HanesBrands, said via the Winston-Salem, NC-based company.

“This is one of the longest-running and most successful partnerships of its type to date – a powerful statement about Michael and Hanes.”

According to Jordan, who has uttered the phrase “Nothing else feels so right” for 30 years, “I’ve always had a special bond with Hanes and the people there. We’ve been together for a long time now spreading the word about comfort, style and innovation – and filming some fun commercials along the way.

“It’s truly been a great relationship, and I’m happy to be celebrating this milestone with them.”
