Jeter, Griffey, Jr, Trout, Dad Star In New Topps MLB Set Designed By Bryce Harper

By Barry Janoff

September 6, 2018: It turns out that Bryce Harper can not only be creative at the plate and in the field, but in a design studio, as well.

Earlier this year, Topps brought the Washington Nationals outfielder to oversee the creation and curation of a MLB card set, handing him the reins to design, artwork, selection of players, typesetting, stats and other elements.

Topps today unveiled the set, “220: Second To None,” based on words followed by Harper.

“This is the title chosen by Bryce Harper for his very own Topps product,” said Topps. “The mantra he attacks with every day. The defining trait of each play hand-picked by Bryce for this trading card set.”

Versions of the set are available at Topps.com for one month only.

Topps said it is planning other sets designed and curated by athletes and celebrities.

The regular set includes 30 cards: 14 base cards of Harper’s Starting 9 and Starting Rotation that feature players who are “second to none”; 16 insert cards including Best Hair (5), Bryce’s Heroes (5) and Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good (6, all of Harper).

A second version adds one autograph or relic card inside. Relic pieces include pieces from a Harper jersey, bat or Home Run Derby base.

Marketing support includes a spot showing Harper working with Topps personnel to design the set, Internet and social media.

Included in the 14 Base Cards starting line-up and pitching rotation are (in alphabetical order): Nolan Arenado, Javier Baez, Mookie Betts, Aroids Chapman, Jacob DeGrom, Sean Doolittle, Freddie Freeman, Manny Machado, JD Martinez, Yadi Molina, Marcel Ozuna, Max Scherzer, Mike Trout and Justin Verlander.

Harper’s Heroes, which pays homage to his “childhood heroes and most-admired peers” includes Josh Gibson, Ken Griffey Jr., Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones and a card of his dad, Ron Harper (pictured with his son after Ron pitched to Bryce when he won the 2018 Home Run Derby).

Best Hair (with a design based on a 1992 Topps set, the year Harper was born) includes Andrew Benintendi, DeGrom, Dereck Rodriguez, Dansby Swanson and Jayson Werth.

An insert titles “Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good,” has cards featuring Harper himself based on his idea that “when you look good and feel good, you play good.”

At the Web site, Topps offers a look at the blueprints Harper and the Topps team used to build the set, including Harper’s handwritten notes and comments.

“From the inclusion of his childhood heroes and most admired peers, to inspiration from his hometown of Las Vegas, to the iron rebar design motif — a nod to the craft of Bryce’s father (an ironworker) — every detail of Topps 222 has been curated by Bryce Harper to reflect who he is and his love of the game,” said Topps.

Topps, which was founded in 1932 and has been creating MLB card sets since 1952, in July extended its exclusive global partnership with the league through 2025.
