Harper, Judge Hit Home Runs With Top-Selling MLB Jerseys Entering 2019 Season

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

March 30, 2019: It’s way too early in the 2019 MLB season to say which players would be named MVPs for their respective leagues, but it’s not too early to see which players are most valuable when it comes to most valuable merchandise movers.

Coming into town with a new 13-year, $330 million contract, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper tops the list of MLB Most Popular Player Jerseys based on sales from MLBShop.com of Majestic jerseys from New Year’s Day thru Opening Day (March 28).

Harper becomes the franchise’s first player to top this list, according to MLB, moving up from No. 13 when he was with the Washington Nationals during the 2018 season.

Harper’s jersey also set pro sports records for most jerseys sold in both the first 24 and 48 hours, respectively, after joining a new team, according to data from Fanatics online shops.

In the days after signing Harper as a free  agent on March 1, the Phillies said they sold more than 180,000 tickets. Sales of his Philadelphia jerseys in the stadium shop were up 5,000% over the previous year, with Harper No. 1, according to Fanatics.

MLB the Show 19 from Sony Entertainment for PlayStation4 initially released a mock cover with Harper in a nondescript grey hoodie, but updated it to show him in his Phillies uniform and cap.

Topps has released its second Harper Living Set card, which happens only when a player switches teams.

Harper is followed by New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, who finished the 2018 season with the top-selling Majestic MLB jersey, matching a feat he accomplished lin 2017 during his rookie campaign.

Mookie Betts of the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox is No. 3.

He is followed by Mike Trout, moving up from No. 11 to No. 4, who just signed a 12-year, $426.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Angeles.

Trout has appeared in each of the most-popular jersey rankings since his MLB debut in 2012, and for the fifth time his jersey is one of the Top Five most popular jerseys in the country.

Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals rounds out the Top Five.

Making their debuts on the most popular player jersey list are reigning National League MVP Christian Yelich (No. 7, Milwaukee Brewers and 2018 All-Star Game MVP Alex Bregman (No. 17, Houston Astros).

At No. 12, Manny Machado, who in February signed a ten-year, $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres, becomes the first member of the Padres to make the most popular player jersey list.

Ichiro Suzuki, who just retired, is No. 13 (Seattle Mariners).

Players representing nine different clubs make up the Top Ten most popular player jerseys.

The Top 20 overall includes nine outfielders, nine infielders, one pitcher and one catcher.

The Chicago Cubs lead with three among the Top 20: Javier Báez (No. 7), Anthony Rizzo, (No. 9) and Kris Bryant (No. 15).

MLB did not release sales figures.
