Harper Driving In MLB Tickets, But Yankees-Red Sox London Scores Hottest Series

By Barry Janoff

March 14, 2019: Bryce Harper has yet to play a regular-season game for the Philadelphia Phillies, but he already has had a major impact on the team’s marketing and ticket sales at home and in MLB.

The Phillies 2019 home opener on March 28 against the Atlanta Braves is among the Top Three best-selling MLB home opener tickets, and overall Phillies ticket sales are among the Top Ten, according to online event ticket exchange StubHub.

StubHub, an official MLB partner, said that “For the first time in a decade, the Philadelphia Phillies earn a spot on StubHub's Top Ten most in-demand teams (No. 7 on the list) after signing Bryce Harper.

“Sales are up 93% from this time last year, the highest growth of all teams since last season.”

Overall, the New York Yankees are the most in-demand MLB team based on total ticket sales on StubHub (thru March 14).

The two-game Mitel & MLB Present London Series 2019 between the Yankees and defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox, scheduled for June 29-30 in London Stadium, is the most in-demand series to date..

In the days after signing Harper as a free agent to a 13-year, $330 million deal on March 1, the Phillies said they sold more than 180,000 tickets. Sales of his Philadelphia jerseys were up 5,000% over the previous year, with Harper No. 1, according to Fanatics.

The free-agent signing of Manny Machado by the San Diego Padres to a ten-year, $300 million contract on Feb. 21 lifted team ticket sales on StubHub by nearly 300% compared to the prior day prior; overall, the team saw a 44% jump in ticket sales from last year, according to the ticket firm.

The most in-demand MLB teams based on total ticket sales on StubHub (thru March 14) behind the Yankees, which also held the No. 1 spot at this time in 2018 are the Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals.

StubHub’s Top Ten also includes the Los Angeles Dodgers, Phillies, Texas Rangers, New York Mets and Houston Astros.

The most-in-demand MLB home openers based on total ticket sales on StubHub (thru March 14) are led by the Arizona Diamondbacks at the Dodgers (March 28), with an average ticket price of $229.

The Top 5 home openers also include:

• Baltimore Orioles at Yankees (average ticket price $202)

• Atlanta Braves at Phillies (average ticket price $84

• Cubs at Rangers (average ticket price $254)

• Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds (average ticket price $122).

Also driving league ticket sales is the two-game Mitel & MLB Present London Series 2019.

“The MLB match-up in London between the Red Sox and Yankees is already the top-selling series heading into the season,” according to StubHub.

“The June 29 game is the No. 1 single event and is outpacing the next best-selling game, the Red Sox home opener against the Blue Jays, by nearly 50%.”

"The appeal of MLB to a global audience continues to grow, and the overwhelming response for the rivalry matchup between the Yankees and Red Sox in London certainly proves that the sport has fans worldwide," Jill Krimmel, StubHub's GM-MLB, said via the San Francisco-based company.

"So far, fans from 44 different states in the U.S. and 27 different countries have already purchased tickets for the MLB London series, demonstrating that baseball has tremendous potential overseas much like the NFL and NBA have seen."
