Hulu Laces Up Its Skates As Official Partner For NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, Finals

April 10, 2018: In its first major move since The Walt Disney Company initiated a deal to became a majority owner, VOD platform and live-steaming TV service Hulu has signed as an official sponsor for the NHL and NHL Players Assn. for the the Stanley Cup playoffs and Stanley Cup Finals.

Financial terms were not shared.

Hulu and the NHL called it a “comprehensive partnership” that would include multi-media marketing, in-arena presence, custom experiences and activation involving NHL players.

The Stanley Cup playoffs begin April 11 and run through the Finals in June.

“(Wednesday) we’ll be embarking on the most exciting and unpredictable time in sports with the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Our main goal is to bring these memorable moments to the broadest possible audience,” Keith Wachtel, chief revenue officer and evp for the NHL, said in a statement.

“Partnering with a powerful brand like Hulu will allow us to drive deeper engagement with our fans. We’re thrilled to partner with Hulu and work together to showcase the road to the Stanley Cup.”

Hulu said it would support the alliance with a national marketing campaign “cross all league touch points including NBC Sports, the NHL’s digital and social channels, as well as camera-visible, in-stadium inventory within all U.S. venues.”

In addition, Hulu will have “integration within all NBC broadcasts with on-air presenting sponsorship of NBC Sports’ NHL Live pre-game show for the Stanley Cup playoffs as well as integration within the broadcast opening.”

With the NHLPA, Hulu will create video vignettes that will showcase NHL stars to “help drive awareness for Hulu as a streaming option for the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs (and) celebrate the excitement of the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs.”

The video vignettes will feature such players as Dustin Brown (Los Angeles Kings), Brent Burns (San Jose Sharks), John Carlson (Washington Capitals), Taylor Hall (New Jersey Devils), Ryan Johansen (Nashville Predators), William Karlsson (Vegas Golden Knights), Phil Kessel (Pittsburgh Penguins), Nikita Kucherov (Tampa Bay Lightning), Brad Marchand (Boston Bruins) and Blake Wheeler (Winnipeg Jets),

According to Sandra Monteiro, NHLPA chief of global business strategies, “The players are at their best, the games at their most intense and fans as passionate as ever each spring when the Stanley Cup playoffs get underway.

“Through this exciting partnership with Hulu, the players will not only be the focal point on the ice as they battle for the Stanley Cup, but they will also drive fans to the action with these exclusive video vignettes.”

Hulu LLC has been operated under the auspices of Disney, 21st Century Fox, NBC Sports owner Comcast and Time Warner. With a move unveiled in December to acquire portions of 21st Century Fox, Disney would retain its 30% ownership of Hulu plus the 30% owned by 21st Century Fox, all pending final approval.

Comcast (30%) and Time Warner (10%) still have ownership roles.

To celebrate opening night of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 11, Hulu will sponsor the NHL’s 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs Party in Las Vegas featuring Logic, which will be free and open to fans outside T-Mobile Arena.
