After Super Bowl LIII, Hyundai Driving Off The Official NFL Sponsorship Lot

By Barry Janoff

January 16, 2019: Auto industry media is reporting that Hyundai would not renew its alliance as the official vehicle and SUV of the NFL when its four-year deal ends after Super Bowl LIII.

Quoting Dean Evans, CMO for Hyundai Motor America, at the Detroit Auto Show, media said the company would not renew the deal but would still maintain significant NFL presence.

That would include presenting sponsor for the NBC’s Sunday Night Football kickoff show (the top-rated show on TV) and its Genesis brand — which has been the official luxury vehicle for the NFL — as sponsor for ESPN’s Monday Night Football halftime, according to Automotive News, AutoSpies.com and CarScoops.com.

Hyundai also has NFL team deals that include the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers.

As part of its NFL deal, Hyundai has also been an official sponsor for the NFL Draft and Kickoff Weekend.

Hyundai in 2015 replaced GM, which had been the NFL’s official automotive partner since 2001.

Among rival companies that might seek to fill the slot, Ford is the league’s official truck partner, Toyota is a sponsor for NBC’s Sunday Night Football halftime as well as Fox’s Thursday Night Football halftime.

Hyundai Motor Group division Kia is the official auto partner for the NBA, Chevrolet the official category partner for MLB, Honda is the NHL’s North American partner.

Hyundai is going out with its pedal to the metal, including a 60-second spot during the first quarter of Super Bowl LIII on CBS Feb. 3 and a 30-second pre-game spot.

This marks the brand’s 11th Super Bowl national broadcast presence in the past 12 years.

The long, humorous spot will star actor Jason Bateman touting the company’s Hyundai Shopper Assurance, which it said has “transformed the car buying process, providing customers with a frictionless, efficient and transparent experience.”

The 2020 Palisade, Hyundai's new flagship premium three-row SUV (available at dealerships summer 2019), will make its TV ad debut in a 30-second spot that will air during the AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Jan. 20, on CBS.

The spot will then run during Super Bowl LIII pre-game programming.

Hyundai said it would also have experiential marketing activations in Atlanta, site of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in which the game will be played.

That includes presence outside Centennial Park at Super Bowl Live, and inside the Georgia World Congress Center as the presenting sponsor of the Super Bowl Experience Driven by Hyundai.

Hyundai said it would host 30 current and former NFL legends for exclusive autograph signings.

Evans, via the car company, said of Hyundai’s Super Bowl LIII activation, "This is a real differentiator for Hyundai, and with national advertising starting for the program, we expect it to continue to drive traffic to our dealers and improve the perception of our brand."
