IBM Puts More AI Tech Into Wimbledon To Bring Fans, Players Closer To Game

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

June 26, 2018:
People watch the Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournament to connect on a personal level with such players as Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens and Garbine Muguruza.

But to help enhance the human experience, IBM, which has been an official partner with the All England Lawn Tennis Club and the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament since 1990, has unveiled a plethora of AI technologies for The Championships 2018.

IBM said this marks “the next phase in the AELTC's journey, cementing digital as the gateway to their brand with unique data insights and AI solutions to drive fan engagement and business efficiency.”

Among the innovations that will impact fans, players, TV viewers and others:

•  Enhanced AI-powered automated video highlights using an AI system that “auto-curates highlights based on analysis of crowd noise, players' movements and match data to help simplify the highlight video production process and focus on key moments in the match.”

According to IBM, as a learning system, Watson has been taught to “better recognize player emotion increasing the quality of the output, while also increasing speed in turnaround time by 15 minutes.”

AI-powered automated video highlights will be generated using IBM Watson and other video and audio technologies to “bring to life the most exciting moments of The Championships from the six main Show Courts.”

•  The Wimbledon Messenger, a social assistant for those off-site, utilizing the Watson Assistant chatbot capability and delivered within Facebook Messenger.

The Wimbledon Messenger experience complements "Fred," Wimbledon's in-app AI assistant, launched in 2017 to provide a personalized on-site visitor experience and further enhanced for 2018.

“This will put more content into social platforms where fans increasingly engage with their friends. The Bot will allow fans to access tailored information on scores, news and players while driving engagement back to the official platforms,” according to IBM.

•  A rebooted Web site, Wimbledon.com, designed to provide content that “refreshes dynamically, making the browsing experience more seamless, but also with greater ability to personalize for different audiences.”

• A new editorial dashboard created for the AELTC digital team that will “populate in near real-time every shot of a match and its excitement level.”

According to IBM, among other uses, AELTC’s digital team will be able to view and find the most exciting shot of the day or the match and leverage this content across all their digital channels, including social.

IBM Watson was employed to create the official Wimbledon 2018 poster, which celebrates 150 years of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. More than 300,000 separate images were reviewed from the entire historical Wimbledon photo archive before nearly 9,000 images were selected to make up the final design.

The Wimbledon Grand Slam runs July 2-15 (ESPN, The Tennis Channel).

Wimbledon official partners include Evian (official water since 2008),Haagen-Dazs (ice cream, 2016), HSBC (bank, 2008), IBM (information technology, 1990), Jaguar Land Rover (car, 2015), Lanson (champagne, 2001), Lavazza (coffee, 2011), Pimm’s (gin, 2017), Ralph Lauren (outfitter, 2006), Robinson’s (soft drink, 1935), Slazenger (ball, 1902) and Stella Artois (beer, 2014).
