‘Inspired’ Iceland Plans To Make A Big Splash With FIFA World Cup Marketing

By Barry Janoff

March 8, 2018: Iceland is a small nation with big plans, including making the most of its time on the global stage of the FIFA World Cup.

Claiming that it is exciting to be “part of something big, even when you are small,” Iceland has unveiled a multi-platform campaign in advance of the nation’s first appearance in FIFA World Cup history.

Whatever its outcome might be on the pitch, Iceland has already made global soccer history by becoming the smallest nation by population — 340,000-350,000 — to ever compete in the World Cup.

The second smallest nation to qualify this year — Uruguay with a population of 3.4 million.

The nation has sent its message worldwide: “Inspired by Iceland,” a joint marketing initiative managed by Promote Iceland in cooperation with the government, tourism, trade and other stakeholders in the nation.

The campaign, which includes TV, Internet and social media, was launched via a message delivered by Iceland President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and First Lady Eliza Reid, who invited the world to “share in the nation's excitement” by joining #TeamIceland, a digital hub designed to celebrate all things Icelandic.

“Win or lose, there is always the excitement of being part of something big, even when you are small.,” offers the President and First Lady, seen kicking a soccer ball in the presidential residence.

Adds First Lady Reid, ”Come along for the celebration, everyone is welcome no matter what you're a fan of, what you believe in, or where you live, there is a place for you on our team."

The National Team has more than 40 marketing partners. Its official kit provider is Italian sports manufacturing company Erreà.

The nation begins its first World Cup quest on June 16 against Argentina, population 37 million, and winners of two World Cups (1978, 1986) with three other finals appearances (1930, 1990, 2014).

Iceland’s Group D also includes Croatia (population 4.3 million and making its fifth World Cup appearance since 1998) and Nigeria (population 185 million, making its sixth World Cup appearance since 1994).

Despite the odds against it, Iceland is confident it could have strength in numbers, which includes recruiting fans from around the globe.

Part of the “Inspired by Iceland” is encouraging people to join #TeamIceland.

Via Facebook or e-mail, people can generate a digital Iceland National Team jersey with their own squad number and their “Icelandic” name.

According to the campaign, Icelanders' surnames are made up of the first name of their father or mother, combined with “dóttir” for daughter and “son” for son.

Thus, a woman named Emily whose father is named Peter would Emily Petersdóttir on her jersey. A man whose name is Don and whose father is named Dylan would have on his jersey Don Dylansson.

Everyone who joins "Team Iceland" will also have the opportunity to win a trip to Iceland to watch the National Team on TV. (Details here.)

Some other things Icelanders would like people to know about Iceland:

• Iceland is a Nordic island country of Europe located in the North Atlantic Ocean.

• The capital is Reykjavik.

• The official language is Icelandic.

• Iceland runs almost completely on renewable energy.

• Most Icelanders are descendants of Norse and Gaelic settlers.
