Iggy Pop Has A Lust For Life . . . And Billabong Board Shorts, Wet Suits, Hoodies

By Barry Janoff

December 4, 2017: James Newell Osterberg Jr. — aka Iggy Pop — may have a "Lust for Life" and feel like a "Real Wild Child," but the 70-year-old “Godfather of Punk” now has another passion.

Pop has joined with lifestyle and beachwear company Billabong for the Iggy Pop x Billabong LAB collection, which the brand says “authentically reflects Iggy's attitude towards life and art.”

The Spring '18 collection was ‘inspired by the punk soundtrack of the late '80s and '90s” and includes men’s and women’s T’s, board shorts, hoodies, hats, a wetsuit jacket, beach towels and other accessories.

How did a musician — whose body of work includes "Lust for Life," "Real Wild Child," "Raw Power" and "The Passenger" — described by Billabong as a “street-walking cheetah with a heart full of Napalm” become the face of surfing and beachwear?

According to Billabong, “These days Iggy is more notorious for lounging all day at the beach or pool in board shorts.”

"I usually wake up and stay nude for three or four hours," Pop said in a statement. ”And when I feel like getting formal, I'll put on board shorts. Life is better in board shorts."

A promo spot features shots of a younger Iggy gyrating on stage interspersed with the current Iggy wearing pieces from the collection, played out to “Raw Power” by Iggy and the Stooges. Additional support includes social media and POP.

The Iggy Pop x Billabong LAB collection was largely inspired by Iggy's gig posters that appeared in the music venue halls of the '80s and '90s, per Billabong.

“These prints are an authentic tribute and a graphic history of Iggy's legendary lust for life and thread the entire collection of board shorts, graphic tees and pullovers.”

The wetsuit top, "Wild Thing Glide Skin," was inspired by the tiger print leather jacket from the seminal album by Iggy and the Stooges, Raw Power, (1973, produced by Pop and David Bowie) but “is now waterproof and ocean ready.”

According to Scott Hargraves, vp-global marketing for Billabong, "We are honored to be working so closely with Iggy on this curated men's and women's collection. He's a true cultural icon, and we hope to pay homage to this living legend through our collaboration."

The Iggy Pop x Billabong LAB collection comes from Billabong LAB, a division of the company that supports artists, musicians, designers, photographers and surf icons; and The Thread Shop, Sony Music's merchandising company that works with artists and brands “to partner and create beautiful, fashionable and elevated new merchandise and products designed to enhance every lifestyle.”

Formed in 1967, Iggy and the Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

The collection is available globally at select specialty retailers and online at www.billabong.com.
