NFL Gets Bettor: 73M-Plus Adults In U.S. Plan To Wager On Games This Season

September 6, 2023: The last time that people in the U.S. wagered on an official NFL game was for Super Bowl LVII this past February.
With the 2023 here, people in the U.S. are ready for more NFL wagering.
Some 73.5 million Americans plan to wager on the NFL this year, a 56% increase from last season, according to a just-released survey from the American Gaming Assn.
The AGA’s 2022 survey found that 46.6 million people in the U.S. said they would bet on the NFL.
The 2023 survey shows that 37% of people who say they are NFL fans will place a bet on the NFL this season, identical to 2022 and “similar” to 2021, according to the AGA.
The AGA says more than $250 billion has been bet with American sportsbooks since 2018, when it became legal.
A record 50 million bet $16 billion on Super Bowl LVII. That number is expected to increase with Super Bowl LVIII in Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas this February.
The increase in number of people wagering is due in part to four more state having legalized sports betting since the 2022 survey: Kansas (Sept. 2022), Maryland (Nov. 2022), Ohio (Jan. 2023) and Massachusetts: (March 2023) bringing the national total of legalized markets to 37 states and Washington DC.
According to the AGA 2023 NFL survey, 19% — just under 50 million — said they would place a bet online, at a casino or via a bookmaker.
The number of people of legal age who will place a bet online rose nearly 53% from 23 million to 35.1 million.
In addition, 13.6 million people say they will place a bet at a brick-and-mortar sportsbook, up three million from last year.
The survey was conducted for AGA by Morning Consult online between Aug. 29-31, 2023, among a national sample 2,200 adults in the U.S.
