Intel Bringing 5G, True VR, Drones Inside Olympics Via Global Alliance With IOC

By Barry Janoff

June 21, 2017: Intel and the International Olympic Committee today unveiled an alliance that makes the tech firm a global top tier partner for the Olympic Games.

The deal begins with the 2018 Winter Games in South Korean and runs through the 2024 Summer Games (with the host site to be named in September).

“We want to change the Olympic experience and bring the experience to more people,” said Brian Krzanich, Intel’s CEO, during a media event to reveal the alliance.

“The Games are in transition and we are proud to have our technology not just be part of that but take the lead. We want the Games to be more engaging, more connected, to immerse more people around the world," said Krzanich.

Financial terms were not released, but industry analysts put it at "nine figures."

Although marketing was not detailed, Intel is expected to support the alliance with a multi-platform effort to include TV, digital, social media and POP. Intel currently runs spots that feature LeBron James and Serena Willams, and is a partner with the upcoming movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The IOC is scheduled to name host cities for the 2024 and 2028 Summer Games this September, with Paris and Los Angeles as the only two candidates. Should Los Angeles get the ’28 Games, it is likely that Intel would extend its IOC partnership.

Intel’s move follows just days after McDonald’s said it would end its top tier alliance with the IOC.

Intel is the 13th IOC global partner, joining Alibaba, Atos, Bridgestone, Coca-Cola, Dow, GE, Omega, Panasonic, P&G, Samsung, Toyota and Visa.

"This is a landmark moment for future of Olympic Games,” said Thomas Bach, IOC president, during the media event. "Intel is a true leader in its field.

“This is a digital age for sports, which means that sports cannot wait. People are going to where the sports are. We have to go to where the people are in the digital world. We have to make use of this cutting edge technology, which is why we are excited about this partnership with Intel."

According to Bach, "This is a huge potential to connect with young people, to benefit the athletes. People can be part of the Games and not just spectators."

Intel said it would use all of its available resources and technology to support its new IOC alliance.

The first activation will take place this February at the Winter Games Pyeongchang, where Intel technology will provide real-time virtual reality viewing of the Olympics.

The alliance will also see Intel infuse its 5G platforms, 3D and 360-degree content development platforms, artificial intelligence platforms and drones, "along with other silicon solutions to enhance the Olympic Games."

in addition, Intel said it would work "across the Olympic Movement and with other Olympic partners to integrate technology into many facets of the Olympic Games."

As part of the ceremony, multi-gold medal volleyball icon Kerri Walsh Jennings unveiled the Olympics banner draped on Intel’s headquarter building in Santa Clara, Calif.

"We are excited to join the Olympic Movement and integrate Intel’s innovative technologies to advance the Olympic Games experience for fans around the world," said Krzanich. "Through this close collaboration with the Olympic family, we will accelerate the adoption of technology for the future of sports on the world’s largest athletic stage."

Intel said its 5G platforms would be used at the Olympic Games to “demonstrate how 5G will transform communications over the next decade. Starting in 2018, Intel will partner on what is expected to be the first 5G showcase, setting the stage for the global deployment of 5G.”

Intel True VR will offer the “first live virtual reality broadcast of the Olympic Winter Games, providing fans the opportunity for a more immersive experience from their own homes.”

Intel drone light show technology will create images in the sky, similar to the Intel drone effects generated during the Super Bowl LI halftime show with Lady Gaga.

Intel 360 replay technology would "allow fans to experience the greatest, most memorable Olympic moments from every angle at the Olympic venues.” Intel used the technology in a spot with Tom Brady that ran during the Super Bowl.

According to Intel, "In the future, TV viewers at home will be able to experience what it’s like to be at the Olympic Games with a front-row seat, or choose from many different viewing points in the Olympic venues."

In addition to South Korea, the upcoming Olympic schedule includes the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo and the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.
