IOC Officially Names Three Cities For 2026 Winter Games: Calgary, Stockholm, Milan

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

October 10, 2018:
Calgary, Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy) and Stockholm (Sweden) have been named as official Candidate Cities for the Olympic Winter Games 2026,

The International Olympic Committee made the decision on its final day of meetings in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The three Candidate Cities will now work with the IOC on a vetting process, including IOC members visiting the sites in March and April 2019.

The IOC said it would publish a report in June 2019, prior to the election of the host city at the 134th IOC Session.

Among the other cities that had expressed interest were Erzurum, Turkey; Sapporo, Japan; and Salt Lake City, which might put in a bid for the 2030 Winter Games, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The U.S. is hosting the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

The 2022 Winter Games will be in Beijing.

The last Winter Games in the U.S, were 2002 in Salt Lake City. The last Winter Games in North America were Vancouver 2010.

“We are very pleased with the quality of the candidatures, and look forward to extending our collaboration with the cities and the respective National Olympic Committees,” IOC President Thomas Bach said in making the official decision.

“It was encouraging to see the impact of Olympic Agenda 2020/New Norm, with an average reduction of 15% in their operating budgets compared to past Candidature Processes, and an increase from 60-80% of existing venues being used."

The decision by the IOC Session “marked the beginning of the shortened formal Candidature Stage, during which the cities will continue to work closely with the IOC to develop their best possible Games plan, in line with Olympic Agenda 2020/New Norm,” according to the IOC.

The candidates are scheduled to submit a single Candidature File in January 2019 as part of a “streamlined process which reduces the cost and complexity for the cities.”

The IOC said its members approved the recommendation of the IOC Executive Board, which was based on the report by the Olympic Winter Games Working Group 2026 after assessing the feasibility of the potential candidate cities.

According to Juan Antonio Samaranch, IOC vp and chair of the Working Group 2026, “We have worked closely with the interested cities, providing our expertise and knowledge and giving them the flexibility to build projects that are aligned with their long-term development plans and will bring lasting legacies.”
