Jackie Robinson Foundation Plans Year-Long Fest To Honor His 100th Birthday

By Barry Janoff

November 8, 2018:
Jackie Robinson, arguably the most iconic and game-changing person in sports history, will be the focus of a year-long celebration in 2019, ostensibly to honor what would have been his 100th birthday on Jan. 31, 2019, but more importantly to support the Jackie Robinson Foundation’s ongoing commitment to equal opportunity.

The Jackie Robinson Foundation will host the year-long Jackie Robinson Centennial Celebration, beginning with an exclusive photograph exhibition — “In the Dugout with Jackie Robinson: An Intimate Portrait of a Baseball Legend” — in the Museum of the City of New York, which opens Jan. 31, Robinson’s birthdate.

He passed away on Oct. 24, 1972.

In the Dugout with Jackie Robinson” features 30 black-and-white image images of Robinson and the Dodgers taken for Look magazine from the Museum's collection, many never seen before in public.

The exhibition also will feature “memorabilia and rare home movies of the Robinson family, as well as the published magazines, which provide a window into the media's portrayal of this groundbreaking figure through the lens of the day’s popular picture press,” according to the Museum.

Various other events will take place in several cities throughout the year, including a speakers’ series, a jazz concert and a traveling artifact exhibit.

The year-long event will culminate with the scheduled opening of the Jackie Robinson Museum in New York in December 2019.

“It has been our family’s dream to have a physical space where my father’s legacy and the values and ideals by which he lived could inspire others.," Sharon Robinson, daughter of Jackie and Rachel Robinson and vice chair of the Jackie Robinson Foundation board of directors, said via the organization. "We are excited to shine a light on my father’s life, while raising funds to continue to positively impact the lives of others.

“A year of specially-designed, celebratory events is a terrific way to shepherd in that dream and lead up to the opening of the Jackie Robinson Museum."

MLB, which has retired Robinson’s No. 42 which he wore with the Brooklyn Dodgers, has signed on as a sponsor of the Jackie Robinson Centennial Celebration.

A special Jackie Robinson Centennial Celebration logo has been designed by Bosack & Company and will be featured on an exclusive line of headwear by New Era Cap, and incorporated into JRF’s social media channels and collateral materials throughout the centennial campaign.

MLB's annual Jackie Robinson Day festivities —  April 15, 2019 — in ball parks nationwide will be included on the roster of Centennial Celebration events, with MLB planning special activation for its annual Jackie Robinson Day when all players wear No. 42 uniforms.

Robinson broke the baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947.

"We are excited to shine a light on my father’s life, while raising funds to continue to positively impact the lives of others.”

Jackie Robinson Foundation Platinum Donors include BMO Capital, Coca-Cola Foundation, GE, Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, MLB, New Era, Nike, Unilever and United Health Foundation.

According to Della Britton Baeza, JRF president, “The contributions of Jackie and Rachel Robinson helped propel our country through challenging times in the past and, through dynamic programming at the Jackie Robinson Museum, the Robinson legacy will continue to promote brotherhood and first-class citizenship for all.

“The Jackie Robinson Centennial Celebration will tout themes of teamwork and fair play as we usher in the opening of the Jackie Robinson Museum in 2019.”
