MVP Candidates LeBron, Curry Show Their MPJ (Most Popular Jersey) Strength

By Barry Janoff

April 14, 2015: If you are looking for signs as to which player might be named MVP for the 2014-15 NBA season, the just-released list of best-selling jerseys for the year could be a place to go.

Or not.

Among the players being named as top contenders for MVP are LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who for the sixth consecutive time had the league's No. 1 selling jersey; Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, whose No. 30 jersey is No. 2 on the best-selling list; and the Oklahoma City Thunder's Russell Westbrook, whose No. 0 jersey was No. 12 on the list.

However, MVP candidate James Harden of the Houston Rockets did not place among the Top 15 (his jersey spot was not given by the NBA), so the theory of selling-to-MVP-voting ratio should be taken with a grain of salt.

Financial figures were not disclosed by the league, with the list based on sales at the NBA Store and online at Store.NBA.com.

Adidas, the official outfitter for the league, recently said it would not renew its contract, an 11-year deal valued at $400 million, with the NBA when it expires following the 2016-17 season.

This year marks the third time that James has claimed the No. 1 as a member of the Cavaliers, the other three coming during his tenure with the Miami Heat.

The Top Five behind James and Curry are Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, Kevin Durant of the Thunder and the Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose, all three of whom have missed significant time this year due to injuries.

The Bulls moved into the top spot for best-selling team merchandise for the first time since the end of the 2011-2012 season. The Cavaliers are No. 2, followed by the Warriors, Lakers and Thunder.

Not in the Top 15 but still selling well nonetheless is the No. 32 jersey of Sim Bhullar of the Sacramento Kings, which is listed as the third most popular item among Fan Favorites behind basketballs and basketball shoes on the NBA Store Web site. The 7 '5", 359 lb. Bhullar signed a ten-day contract this month and became the first NBA player of Indian descent.

Washington Wizards point guard John Wall finished at No. 13, entering the Top 15 for the first time since his rookie season in 2010-11.

Carmelo Anthony's jersey came in at No. 8 despite the fact that he has not played since the All-Star Game and also despite the New York Knicks' worst season in team history.

Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs had the No. 7 best-selling jersey despite the fact that he has been with the team since 1997.
