April 24, 2013: A good number of the players who are moving from college to the NFL via the 2013 Draft on Thursday (April 25) will likely be able to secure endorsement deals, some more than others.
But only Jarvis Jones has signed a deal and also secured a life-size bust in his image made of food to honor the occasion.
Jones, a top-rated outside linebacker from the University of Georgia, has signed a deal to become a "Famous Fan" for Subway. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Jones is expected to be among the top players selected in Thursday's 2013 NFL Draft. Before that, he spent time at a Subway location in New York, where he unveiled for media and customers a life-size “Smokehouse BBQ Chicken" statue in his image.
Jones joins a roster of fellow Famous Fans that includes Robert Griffin III, Justin Tuck, Michael Strahan, Ndamukong Suh, Blake Griffin, Mike Trout, Carl Edwards, Eric LeGrand, Nastia Liukin and Michael Phelps.
Suh tweeted on his account, "Welcome to the fam(ily) @sacmanjones_29. I remember [my Subway statue] like it was yesterday." Suh was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2010 and that season was named the AP defensive rookie of the year.
Jones also follows in the footsteps of RG3, who signed with Subway last year and before the draft had his own meat and side dish statue made and unveiled in his honor.
When reminded of that, as well as the fact that as a rookie quarterback he led the Washington Redskins into the NFL playoffs and was named the AP offensive rookie of the year, Jarvis referred to "Subway magic."
"That's one of my goals," he said regarding the success of the Famous Fans preceded him. "That would be a great accomplishment to start off my career."
Subway said the statue, designed by artist James Victor, is "approximately three feet tall and made almost entirely from more than 10 lbs. of Subway Smokehouse BBQ Chicken."
However, Jones said that his favorite Subway sandwich is the footlong Chicken Teriyaki.
