JBL Extends With NBA, Teams, Players, Seeks Not To Be Silenced By Beats By Dre

By Barry Janoff

September 12, 2018: Earlier this month, the NBA signed a global multi-year global marketing and merchandising partnership with Beats by Dre, naming the company the official headphone, wireless speaker and audio partner of the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League and USA Basketball.

Beats replaced Harman JBL in those categories.

Apparently JBL still plans to make plenty of noise during the NBA season.

Harman JBL said it has extended its alliance with the NBA, which dates back to 2014, to remain an NBA ambassador, with plans to add teams and players to the JBL Ambassador Program.

To that end, JBL said it has signed Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks; as well as team deals with the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat, starting during the 2018-2019 season.

JBL already has NBA deals that include Stephen Curry, Andre Drummond and Kristaps Porzingis, the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics.

Financial terms of the NBA-JBL deal were not released.

Regarding the situation of the NBA having rival companies in the same category, the league reiterated that Beats By Dre is its new official partner in headphone, wireless speaker and audio categories but that it would continue to work with JBL with their team and player deals.

In addition to multi-media marketing support, Beats said it would “collaborate with and establish separate deals with NBA teams and launch a line of its audio products for fans around the world including NBA team-branded headphones.”

The NBA deal with Beats allows it to provide product to players and activate during such marquee events as NBA All-Star, NBA Draft presented by State Farm, international NBA games in China and Europe, WNBA All-Star, WNBA Draft presented by State Farm and USA Basketball men’s and women’s national team exhibition tours.

According to Mark Tatum, NBA deputy commissioner, “JBL has been a great partner and we look forward to supporting their efforts as they continue to work with top players and teams.”

JBL said it would develop multi-media marketing around its Ambassador Program for both national and regional release.

Through these team partnerships, JBL said it would “engage with fans in local markets that bring them closer to their favorite teams, adding that JBL audio “powers 50% of professional basketball arenas nationally.”

“JBL and the NBA intersect perfectly at the heart of music, sports, technology and culture,”  Ralph Santana, CMO for Harman, said in a statement. “We’ve established a strong basketball heritage through our collaboration with amazing athletes and teams.

“Looking forward, it was important to us to continue growing our thriving ambassador program, and to get one step closer to fans and consumers by working directly with players and teams. These partnerships will enable us to provide fans with unique content and epic experiences at the intersection of music and sports,” said Santana.

In an intro spot from Beats, “NBA and Beats,” many of the brand’s endorsers are front-and-center, including LeBron James, Draymond Green, James Harden, Ben Simmons, Jayson Tatum and Karl-Anthony Towns.

In addition to its NBA alliance, JBL also has endorsers who include Aaron Judge (New York Yankees), actress Priyanka Chopra, Demi Lovato and Quincy Jones.
