Nick Of Time: John Cena’s Schedule Is Kids’ Choice, Slime, Ninja Turtles, Spotless

Special to NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

January 11, 2018: John Cena, who continues to made his mark as a WWE Superstar, also continues to expand beyond that universe to become an actor and producer, adding to his global popularity en route.

Nickelodeon recognizes Cena’s impact, and has added more slime to its relationship with him.

The cable network said that Cena would return to host the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards for the second consecutive year, “while also breaking new ground at the network with two firsts.”

Cena will be the voice of Baron Draxum, a villain in the new animated series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, scheduled to premiere later this year.

He also will be executive producer for the new competition series, Keep It Spotless, where teams of kids go head-to-head in a battle to stay clean, also scheduled to premiere later this year.

“The excitement can NOT be contained!” Cena wrote on his Twitter page. “It’s official: It’s slime season and I’m back to host the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards for a second time on March 24.”

Regarding his other projects for Nickelodeon, “Humbled to work on so many projects with an amazing partner like Nickelodeon. Ready to bring energy to a celebrated franchise like #TMNT and fun show like #KeepItSpotless. #LetsGetToWork.”

Cena also posted video on YouTube revealing his upcoming Nickelodeon projects.

“John Cena is one of the biggest stars in the world. Kids just love him, which makes him the perfect partner for these upcoming projects,” Cyma Zarghami, president for Nickelodeon Group, said in a statement. “His blend of humor and originality brings a fresh voice to Nickelodeon both in front of the camera and behind.”

Cena’s recent roles include the voice of the title character in the animated movie, Ferdinand; and Ewan O’Hara, the special-ops brother to one of the lead characters in Psych: The Movie, a reprisal of the popular TV show that ran on USA Network from 2009-14.

He is among the most popular athletes on social media, part of a list that includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Leo Messi, David Beckham and fellow WWE star-turned-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Cena has 45 million-plus likes on his Facebook page, 10.9 million followers on Twitter and 8.2 million followers on Instagram.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Nickelodeon on three big projects that run the range of what kids love: slime-filled live events, awesomely cool animation and competition shows where kids take their shot at being the best,” Cena said in a statement.

“It’s an honor to come back a second time to host the biggest, slimiest party of the year, the Kids’ Choice Awards. Not only do I get to be a cartoon character in the new Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, but I get to be a villain, too.

“And to top it all off, I’m stepping behind the camera to executive produce Nick’s new competition series, Keep It Spotless, which gives a whole new meaning to staying clean.”

Sponsors of Nickelodeon’s 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards include Barbie, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Swiffer and Toyota.

The presenting international sponsor for the 2018 Nickelodeon’s Kids' Choice Awards is Heelys.
