Michael Jordan Still Has (Video)Game As Cover, Playing Star Of 'NBA 2K11'

June 3, 2010: Just days after EA Sports announced that hockey legend Wayne Gretzky would appear on the cover of, and also be part of the action in, its NHL Slapshop game, 2K Sports has also gone to a sports legend. Taking the best of the best from pro basketball, the videogamer said that Michael Jordan would be its cover athlete for NBA 2K11 and also be included in game action.

Jordan recently became majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, also making this the first time that an NBA team owner has appeared on the cover of an NBA 2K game.

NBA 2K11 will be available Oct. 5, to coincide with the start of the 2010-11 NBA season. Marketing support will include print and Internet, including a dedicated Facebook page.

“It’s an honor to be featured on the cover of NBA 2K11,” Jordan, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009, said in statement. "I’m looking forward to getting back out onto the court, virtually. Let’s hope they get my dunk from the foul line right.”

The unveiling of the NBA 2K11 cover coincides with the start of the 2009-11 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. While a member of the Chicago Bulls, Jordan won six NBA titles, each time coached by current Lakers' head coach Phil Jackson.

Although he has been retired since 2003, Jordan still ranks among sports most marketable personalities and among the players most closely associated with the NBA. He also appears in a current campaign for Hanes and plays a major role with Nike's Jordan Brand division.

“Without a doubt, Michael Jordan is the greatest of all time and we’re excited to partner with a living legend,” Greg Thomas, president of product development for 2K Sports, a division of Take-Two Interactive Software, said in a statement. “Working with Jordan adds tremendously to our game and lets us do things with NBA 2K11 that we’ve never been able to do before.”

NBA 2K11 will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and 3, PSP, PC DVD and Wii. Kobe Bryant appeared on the cover of NBA 2K10.
