Marcus Jordan-adidas Hoops Controversy Gets Really Real

November 13, 2009: Michael Jordan's son Marcus was wearing his Air Jordans when he hit the court on Nov. 13 for his first Division I game as a rookie point guard with the University of Central Florida. The game, an 84-67 UCF victory against the University of Massachusetts, attracted 8,727, the second largest hoops crowd in team history, (and more than double last year's season opener), including Michael Jordan sitting in a luxury box and adding another high-profile scenario to the university's recent public showings.

The situation between UCF and adidas has not been resolved. Marcus Jordan has been wearing Nike Air Jordans despite the university's exclusive contract with adidas, said to be $3 million over seven years. But when and if any legal dust has cleared, analysts believe Michael Jordan won't leave his son and his son's school hanging, meaning a sponsorship deal with either Nike or Jordan Brand should adidas officially pull out.

In the game, Marcus Jordan played 11 minutes, had two rebounds, two assists and no points off the bench. He wore black Air Jordan's. Afterward, Jordan made his first public comments on the issue to reporters.

"I don't think we want to get involved in it," Jordan said regarding Nike and the Jordan Brand division. "We're already involved in it just because it's my kid. But it's something that UCF has to work out with adidas, and we're not a player in this whole process."

Michael Jordan was in Miami on Nov. 12 as part of the unveiling of the 25th anniversary Air Jordans. Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat, who switched from Nike division Converse to sibling Jordan Brand this year, will wear the AJ 2010 at the NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 13, 2010 as part of Jordan Brand's 25th anniversary campaign. UCF reported a 20.6% increase in hoops season-ticket sales year with Jordan on the roster. UCF said it sold 1,481 full-season Knights' tickets last season. The count already has passed 1,840 for 2009-10.
