Yankees Judge Leads MLB Top-Selling Jerseys, Helps Topps Break Records

By Barry Janoff

October 3, 2017: Even as he was setting MLB rookie marks and New York Yankees team marks on the field, Aaron Judge was a significant factor in selling MLB jerseys and Topps baseball cards.

Judge hit an MLB rookie one-season record 52 homers (topping Mark McGwire’s 49 in 1987) and 33 home runs in Yankee Stadium (breaking Babe Ruth’s team record 32 set in 1921 in the Polo Grounds.

His on-field prowess has translated into strong marketing production..

Judge become only the second rookie in baseball history to lead MLB in jersey sales for the entire season, joining Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs, who accomplished the feat during this rookie season in 2015.

Meanwhile, Judge was driving sales of MLB Topps Now cards, which commemorate historic MLB moments and are available online usually the day after the event takes place, but for only 24 hours.

The trading card and collectibles company said it has hit the one million sales mark in Topps NOW cards since launching the platform in 2016.

Sales of Judge’s Topps NOW alone this season are nearing 100,000, including a one-card mark 16,138 copies of the card commemorating his rookie record-breaking 50th home run.

According to MLB and the MLB Players Assn., seven of the Top 10 and 15 of the Top 20 players who lead the league in jersey sales in 2017 will participate in this year’s post-season.

The list is based on sales of Majestic jerseys from MLBShop.com, the official online shop of MLB, since Opening Day 2017.

The average age of the Top 10 players is 27. Players representing 13 different clubs make up the Top 20 most popular player jerseys, which includes ten infielders, five outfielders, three catchers and two pitchers.

Behind Judge, the Top Ten includes Bryant, Anthony Rizzo (Chicago Cubs), Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers), Bryce Harper (Washington Nationals), Buster Posey (San Francisco Giants), Yadier Molina (St. Louis Cardinals) Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels), Francisco Lindor, Cleveland Indian) and Javier Báez (Chicago Cubs).

Judge’s record-breaking 50th home run Topps NOW card broke the single-card record of 11,550 commemorating Ichiro Suzuki’s 3,000th career hit in 2016.

Judge's 2017 Home Run Derby championship card is third all-time (8,997).

"Topps NOW has been a truly innovative program that Topps was thrilled to bring to sports fans and collectors first," David Leiner, GM and vp-North American Sports & Entertainment for Topps, said in a statement.

"The program resonated with baseball fans because it helped bring them closer to a sport they are truly passionate about. Whether it’s a walk-off win, an amazing home run-robbing catch or a great milestone, fans know they can count on Topps NOW to capture those moments almost immediately.”

According to Leiner, "Judge has really grabbed the attention of baseball fans everywhere. His Topps NOW cards have been some of the most popular in the program from his debut in 2016 to winning the 2017 Home Run Derby to breaking the rookie record.”

Topps NOW 2017 MLB cards will continue throughout the playoffs and World Series.
