Kellogg's Unboxes Road To Rio Campaign With Athletes, Marketing And, Yes, Cereal

By Barry Janoff

April 28, 2016: Kellogg's, an official partner with the U.S. Olympic Committee and supplier of breakfasts nationwide, has launched a multi-platform effort that will build as the 2016 Olympics draw nearer.

The campaign includes a roster of Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls on Team Kellogg's, led by world-renowned  swimmer Dana Torres; marketing anchored by TV and social media under the theme, "What Gets You Started"; and special-edition boxes of cereal, such as Cron Flakes, Frosted Flakes and Special K, with members of Team Kellogg's on each box.

The company was an official supporter of the Olympic Games from 1976-1992 and the USOC from 2000-08, then returned with a long-term deal prior to the 2012 Summer Games in London.

“Whether you are a working mom raising kids or an elite Olympic or Paralympic athlete, Kellogg’s understands that everyone faces ups and downs as they work to reach their full potential each day," Noel Geoffroy, svp-marketing & innovation for Kellogg’s U.S. Morning Foods, said in a statement."That’s why this year, Kellogg’s is making unprecedented connections between the starts of everyday people and and those of first-time Team USA Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls."

In addition to Torres, the full roster of Team Kellogg’s  includes Simone Biles (gymnastics), Julie Johnston (soccer), Tom Shields (swimming), Ajee Wilson (800 meters) and Natalie Bieule (Paralympics discus).

Biles will appear on boxes of Corn Flakes and Special K with Red Berries, Johnston on boxes of Corn Flakes and Special K, Wilson will appear on boxes of Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes, Shields will be on Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes and Bieule will appear on boxes of Corn Flakes, Special K and Special K with Red Berries.

The boxes are scheduled to hit retail in June.

An extended spot, "What Gets You Started," shows the athletes at home and with their family, then follows them through their respective workouts and other regimen as they talk about what motivates them.

Each of the Team Kellogg's athletes also has a breakout spot, including Biles, Shields and Bieuile.

According to Torres, a 12-time Olympic medalist who competed in the 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000 and 2008 Summer Games, “I look forward to connecting with fans and helping my fellow Team Kellogg’s members and first-time Team USA hopefuls on their journey to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"Everyone has something that drives them to succeed, and I am thrilled to be able to help people explore their motivations and find common ground in what gets us all started, fans and athletes alike," said Torres.

Worldwide sponsors aligned with the International Olympic Committee include Atos, Bridgestone, Coca-Cola, Dow, GE, McDonalds, Omega, Panasonic, Samsung, P&G and Visa.

Domestic Team USA partners include 24 Hour Fitness, Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser), AT&T, BMW, BP, Chobani, Citi, Deloitte, Dick's Sporting Goods, The Hartford, Hershey, Hilton, JetSt, Kellogg's, Liberty Mutual, Milk Life, Nike, Oakley, Ralph Lauren, Smucker's, Ameritrade, United and USG.
