Clayton 'Cy Young' Kershaw Also Becomes Most Valuable Pitchman For Marketers

By Barry Janoff

November 14, 2014: Three-time Cy Young Award winner and 2014 National League MVP Clayton Kershaw has added another accolade to his resume: He is now a member of Subway's Famous Fans.

Kershaw signed the deal to coincide with his becoming the first National League pitcher since Bob Gibson in 1968 to win the Cy Young and MVP in the same season.

(Justin Veralnder of the Detroit Tigers did it in the American League in 2011.)

Kershaw earns about $2-$3 million in national endorsements, according to industry analysts, including Muscle Milk, Under Armour (shoes) and the Wilson A2000 CK22 GM glove named for him. The say he could easily double that during the off-season

The Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher joins American League MVP Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a member of the Subway Famous Fans endorsement team. Financial details were not disclosed.

"Two MVPs are better than one. Welcome Clayton Kershaw to the Subway Famous Fan lineup, joining fellow MVP Mike Trout!" Subway posted on its Facebook page.

According to Subway, Kershaw's favorite sandwich is a Turkey and Swiss on whole wheat with lettuce, pickles, jalapeños, vinegar and mustard.

Kershaw and Trout appeared together in a print ad that ran today (Nov. 14) in USA Today. Additional marketing, including TV and social media, is expected to follow.

Kershaw also is the catalyst behind Kershaw’s Challenge, an organization whose goal is to "provide a better quality of life and give opportunities to vulnerable, underprivileged children, from the skyscraping cities of Los Angeles & Dallas, to the dirt roads of Zambia."

Kershaw's Challenge has created an MVP 2014 T-shirt to honor the pitcher, with proceeds going to the cause. (Details here.)

This year, Kershaw's Challenge has partnered with four non-profits who "share a passion and vision to make life-changing impacts. CURE International, Lusaka, Zambia; Arise Africa, Lusaka, Zambia; Dream Center, Los Angeles; Mercy Street, Dallas, based in Kershaw's home town.

Muscle Milk posted this congratulatory message on its Twitter page: "239 Strikeouts 1 No-Hitter 1.77 ERA Cy Young Award MVP .@ClaytonKersh22 is having the best week ever. #MVP"

And from Under Armour, "Congrats to @ClaytonKersh22 for his third NL Cy Young Award! A spectacular season by a spectacular athlete."

Added Wilson, "Easy as 1,2,3 . . . Congrats to @ClaytonKersh22 on his 3rd Cy Young in 4 years! #KsForDays #TeamWilson."

"An individual player is part of a greater whole — a player is part of a team," Kershaw, who also won the Cy Young in 2011 and 2013, said in a statement. "So any recognition of a single player is really just a reflection of the bigger picture. I'm really humbled to receive the award for Most Valuable Player in the National League.

"I never imagined getting to receive this honor. To my teammates and coaches, this is a shared honor. I'm thankful to share seasons with gifted guys I respect. To the Dodgers organization and fans — playing baseball in Los Angeles is a privilege and I'm proud to represent you. Thanks for making the 2014 baseball season one I will remember for the rest of my life."

In addition to Trout (Spicy Italian), the roster of Subway Famous Fans (and their favorite sandwiches) includes Robert Griffin III (Turkey Breast), Russell Westbrook (Chicken & Bacon Ranch Melt), Pelé (Tuna), Torah Bright (Turkey Breast), Apolo Ohno (Turkey Breast), Nastia Liukin (Turkey Breast), Michael Phelps (Turkey Breast, Oven-Roasted Chicken), Carl Edwards (Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki), Ryan Howard (Roost Beef) and Eric LeGrand (Black Forest Ham).

On Nov. 18, Kershaw signed a deal with OneHope Wine to produce a "Clayton Kershaw Signature Series varietal." Proceeds of sales go to support the Los Angeles chapter of Kershaw's Challenge. "Clayton and Ellen Kershaw feel a deep connection to Los Angeles, so every bottle of Clayton Kershaw's Signature Series will help a family there get back onto their feet," Melissa Lake, executive director for the OneHope Foundation, said in a statement.
