KFC Battle of the Buckets Campaign Had Free Range On ESPN The Ocho

By Barry Janoff

August 8, 2018: It might be unusual to see featured during prime hours on ESPN such competitions as Ping-Pong, darts, eating, Dodge Juggle, Rock-Paper-Scissors and Chess Boxing.

What might be even more quirky is seeing real athletes perform real sports while wearing buckets from Kentucky Fried Chicken on their head.

On Aug. 8, ESPN converted ESPN2 to ESPN8 — The Ocho — named in honor of the network that appeared in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004).

The 24-hour makeover was done with lead sponsor Kentucky Fried Chicken, which sponsored “Battle of the Buckets” vignettes throughout the programming, supported by a spot, "What's For Dinner?" featuring Jason Alexander as the newest incarnation of Col. Harland Sanders.

Athletes featured in the vignettes included Brad Angelo (two-time PBA champion bowler ), Donn Cabral (eight-time NCAA All-American and ten-time Ivy League champion cross country and track runner), Keith Dorman (30-year veteran bocce player ), pro skateboarder Isiah Hilt, Nicole Rinaldi (competitive power lifter and CrossFit competitor) and super-lightweight professional boxer Josue “The Prodigy” Vargas.

ESPN CreativeWorks worked with KFC’s creative agency, Wieden+Kennedy Portland, on the creative, in addition to Anchor Worldwide.

ESPN8 The Ocho Presented by KFC Battle of the Buckets spots included scripted commentary and analysis from SportsCenter anchors John Buccigross and Kenny Mayne.

The spots got a surreal start when Buccigross said of Mayne, “Kenny’s not bored, kids. He’s heavily sedated.”

That led into vignettes showing the real athletes attempting their real sports, but with the hindrance of having a KFC bucket adorned with the face of Col. Sanders covering their head and eyes.

In "Skateboarding," we see Isiah Hilt in action. "He usually skateboards in the nude," offer the commentators. "Today, he's wearing shorts and a KFC bucket."

"Boxing" finds Vargas fighting "another human being.” As they can’t see each other, we get “a lot of air being punched . . . Punch count at zero after 57 punches thrown.” Ultimately, Vargas connects and wins by “knocking the other guy’s bucket off.”

In "Bocce," Dorman appears to lose until its discovered that his opponent, also wearing a KFC bucket, had cheated by drilling eyeholes in the container,

"Powerlifting" sees Nicole Rinaldi lift the weights over her head, but because the bucket impairs her vision she can’t put the weights down, leading Buccigross and Mayne to find ways to fill the dead air.

Other vignettes included "Hurdles" and "Bowling."

The 24 hours of ESPN8 concluded with a showing of Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
