Kyrie Irving Was Dressed As Uncle Drew When He Got The News About Boston Trade

By Barry Janoff

October 11, 2017: One of the biggest trades of the NBA off-season saw all-star Kyrie Irving go from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Boston Celtics in late August in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a 2018 first-round pick.

Irving had set the wheels in motion by requesting a trade after the Cavaliers lost to the Golden State Warriors in the 2017 NBA Finals, and was being kept up to date by his agent.

But when the news of the trade actually happened, Irving was in costume as his alter ego, Uncle Drew of Pepsi commercials fame, and without his cell phone.

So it was up to his co-stars, former NBA players and current NBA on TNT commentators Reggie Miller and Chris Webber, to pass long the life-altering details.

According to Miller, they and other current and former NBA and WNBA players were in Atlanta filming Uncle Drew, starring Irving as a former playground legend, now a senior citizen, who still has his hoops moves.

Miller, Webber and the others got the news via their cell phones.

Irving didn’t get the message because, at that moment, he didn’t have his phone with him.

“This is what’s funny about the whole Kyrie Irving trade,” Miller said during a media conference call today to preview the NBA on TNT’s 2017-18 coverage.

“Chris and I were filming a scene for the Uncle Drew movie in Atlanta, C-Webb as Preacher, Nate Robinson as Boots, myself as Lights and Kyrie obviously as Uncle Drew. We were in this small, hot, cramped van getting ready to shoot a scene and all of our phones ding and received a message at the same time.

“Except for Kyrie. He didn’t have his phone. And we looked at our phones. C-Webb looks at us — the message was that Kyrie had been traded to Boston,” said Miller.

Rather than reacting to the news, Miller said he and Webber hesitated for a few moments that likely seemed much longer.

“We’re looking at each other (thinking), Should we tell him?,” Miller said. “Obviously we had to tell him. He was right in front of us. So we showed him the phone.”

Miller and Webber didn’t know how Irving would respond, but the reaction they did get probably was not close to what they expected.

“His expression was funny,” said Miller. “His look was like, Huh? Okay. That was it. He wasn’t like Oh my god! He wasn’t sad. He wasn’t excited. He was like, Let’s do this. And that’s how we all found out that he had been traded to the Celtics.” (Laughs.)

That was the calm before a bit of a storm, according to Irving.

“I was on set,” Irving said during his introductory Celtics press conference on Sept. 1 after the deal had been approved by the NBA. “I cursed probably twice. Then I ran out onto the streets of Atlanta and watched the cars go by.”

Even with the trade, Irving wasn’t away from the Uncle Drew set for too long.

During that introductory press conference, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said that Irving would be returning to the movie production when his initial work with the team was done.

Turner Sports officially tips off the 2017-18 NBA regular season on Oct. 17, with an NBA on TNT Opening Night doubleheader, the first game of which sees LeBron James and the Cavaliers hosting Irving and his new Boston Celtics teammates.

The second game features the defending NBA champion Warriors, who will receive their 2016-17 title rings before hosting the Houston Rockets.

During the NBA on TNT media call, Webber recalled more of the incident when they told Irving he had been traded.

“Right after that, I looked at Reggie and asked, Who has that game the first night?” (Laughs.)

Miller said he looked back at Webber and said, “Well, you know, Marv (Albert) always does ring ceremony Opening Night, so that’s probably going to be you C-Webb because Kevin (McHale) and I are probably going to get Kyrie and LeBron on the return (to Cleveland).

“And C-Webb said, C’mon man. Can’t it be a three-man booth?”

The Uncle Drew movie is a Summit Entertainment release produced by Temple Hill in association with PepsiCo's Creators League Studios.

The scheduled release date is June 29, 2018.

The cast includes Kyrie Irving, Lil Rel Howery, Shaquille O'Neal, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, Chris Webber, Erica Ashv, Erica Ash, Lisa Leslie and Nick Kroll.

According to the studio, the story follows Dax (Lil Rel Howery), who, "after draining his life savings to enter a team in the Rucker Classic street ball tournament in Harlem, is dealt a series of unfortunate setbacks, including losing his team to his longtime rival (Nick Kroll).

“Desperate to win the tournament and the cash prize, Dax stumbles upon the man, the myth, the legend Uncle Drew (Kyrie Irving) and convinces him to return to the court one more time.

“The two men embark on a road trip to round up Drew’s old basketball squad (Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie) and prove that a group of septuagenarians can still win the big one.”
