Los Angeles Clippers Join Rush Of NBA Teams To Own Gatorade League Teams

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

May 16, 2017: The Los Angeles Clippers this week signed a deal to own and operate a franchise in the NBA’s developmental Gatorade League, to be known as the Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario (Calif.).

Founded in 2001-02 as the Developmental League with eight teams, the circuit will now have a record 26 teams for the 2017-18 season, all of which are owned or operated by an NBA club.

In February , it was unveiled that beginning next season, under what was called an unprecedented alliance, the D-League will be rebranded as the NBA Gatorade League, G-League for short.

In addition to the Clippers, five other NBA teams have unveiled new G-League deals since December: the Atlanta Hawks (Erie BayHawks), Memphis Grizzles (name TBD, located in Southaven Miss.), Milwaukee Bucks (name TBD, located in Oshkosh, Wisc.), Minnesota Timberwolves (Iowa Energy) and the Orlando Magic (Lakeland Magic).

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians owns Tahquitz and Indian Canyons recreational areas and operates two 18-hole championship golf courses, and the Agua Caliente Casino Resorts, which includes the Spa Resort Casino in downtown Palm Springs and the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage.

"This is another exciting day for the NBA (G)-League as we add a record 26th team and continue to move closer to our 30-team vision,” Malcolm Turner, NBA G-League president, said in a statement.

"(This) is the latest example of the value NBA teams place on developing young talent on and off the court. I’m thrilled to welcome Steve Ballmer and the Clippers, in partnership with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, to the NBA D-League family," said Turner.

The Clippers’ new NBA G-League affiliate will play its 24 games in Ontario’s Citizens Bank Arena, which is located 40 miles west of Los Angeles.

According to Doc Rivers, Clippers president of basketball operations and head coach, "This is a great day for the Clippers. Having our own development team in the Inland Empire is another example of the dedication and investment to winning and creating a first-class organization that (franchise majority owner) Steve Ballmer brings to this franchise.

"We now have a place close to home where our young players and staff members have the ability to develop and gain important experience."

Gatorade is a founding partner of the NBA D-League, and has been aligned with the NBA since 1984.

According to the NBA, 40% of current NBA players have spent time in the NBA D-League and four current NBA head coaches had been coaches with NBA D-League teams.
