They Love L.A.: LeBron, Lakers, Clippers Top StubHub NBA Ticket Demand

By Barry Janoff

October 8, 2019: Following an off-season filled with surprises, there are relatively few surprises entering the 2019-20 NBA campaign when it comes to the most popular teams, players, tickets and merchandise sales.

Anthony Davis joined LeBron James with the Los Angeles Lakers, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard moved to the Los Angeles Clippers, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant are now members of the Brooklyn Nets, Russell Westbrook joined James Harden with the Houston Rockets and overall No.1 draft choice Zion Williamson and Lonzo Ball are the new faces for the New Orleans Pelicans.

And those players and teams top the lists of e-ticket marketplace StubHub ticket sales and jersey and merchandise sales on eBay (which owns StubHub).

The Lakers are the most in-demand team in ticket sales for the third straight season, based on StubHub ticket sales as of Oct. 8, outselling the No. 2 Clippers by 32%.

But the Clippers are the No. 1 trending team entering the season, with the largest increase in ticket sales of any team this season — up 821% and nine times the sales of 2018, according to StubHub.

The Clippers rise in ticket demand is followed by the Pelicans (323%), Nets (171%), Atlanta Hawks (136%) and Denver Nuggets (59%).

"The biggest story of this year's NBA off-season was undoubtedly the rise of the star player duos and StubHub has seen this in sales with a significant uptick from those teams as fans ramp up to see the debut of these incredible athletes," Akshay Khanna, GM of the NBA for StubHub, said via the company

"The Clippers ticket sales were a staggering 800% higher this year than last, showing the power of celebrity in the NBA."

The Lakers and Clippers, which both play in Staples Center (although the Clippers are planning to move to a new arena in the near future) also top the list of ticket sales for most in-demand games.

The two most in-demand games (based on StubHub ticket sales as of Oct. 8) are the Lakers vs. Clippers (Oct. 22, Clippers the home team) and Clippers vs Lakers (Dec.25, Lakers the home team).

The LeBron-AD led Lakers take up five of the Top Seven in-demand games at this point, also including No. 4. Pelicans vs. Lakers (Oct. 25), No. 6. Golden State Warriors vs. Lakers (Nov. 13) and No. 7. Lakers vs. Pelicans (Nov. 27) in Smoothie King Center.

At No. 3. is the Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers (Oct. 23) and No. 5. Milwaukee Bucks vs. 76ers (Dec. 25).

The most popular NBA player jerseys (based on eBay sales October 2018-October 2019) are topped by James, with the Top Five also including Stephen Curry (Warriors) Irving, 2018-19 NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks) and Durant (Nets).

Some slight movement among the most popular player merchandise (based on eBay sales October 2018-October 2019): James, Curry, Durant, Irving and Antetokounmpo.

“Clearly LeBron is still the must-see player in the NBA, as the Lakers remain StubHub’s No. 1 team for the third year in a row,” said Khanna.

“However, both of the Los Angeles teams are driving major demand this year on StubHub. In fact, the combined sales of the two Lakers-Clippers games are outselling the top two games of 2018 by nearly 40%, and that gap will grow as the Christmas game approaches.”

Even with the challenging situation involving China, the NBA’s international policy is paying dividends.

This off-season the NBA played games to India for the first time, and domestic sales driven by international buyers has grown 34% since last year, according to StubHub.

Sales from international buyers for NBA games in the U.S. have increased a total of 34% since last season,

StubHub said ticket sales show that “more than half of New York Knicks tickets (55%) come from international buyers, the most in the league; and nearly one third of all fans attending NBA games in the state of California are from outside the U.S.”

Behind the Knicks, the Top Five teams with the greatest percentage of sales on StubHub from buyers outside of North America are the Nets (45%), Lakers (37%), Warriors ((37%) and Orlando Magic (33%).

The Top Five countries with people who travel to the U.S. for games are Australia, China, the U.K., France and Italy.

“It’s remarkable that the NBA is expanding to hosting games in five countries outside of the U.S. this year,” said Khanna.

“The NBA continues to grow the league across the world, building fans along the way.”
