LeBron, Giannis Named Team Captains; Starters, Reserves Picked For All-Star '23

UPDATED February 2, 2023: The 14 reserves for the NBA All-Star Game were named tonight during TNT NBA Tip-Off, joining the player pool for Team LeBron and Team Giannis.

The 30 NBA coaches selected the reserves, voting for two guards, three frontcourt players and two players at any position in their respective conferences.

Every quarter of the game will count toward supporting two community-based organizations in Utah:

Team LeBron will play for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah.

Team Giannis will play for Raise The Future.

A total of $750,000 will be contributed to the two organizations.

UPDATED January 26, 2023: LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo have been named as captains from the Western Conference and Eastern Conference, respectively, for the NBA All-Star Game, scheduled for Feb. 19 in Vivint Arena, Salt Lake City.

NBA All-Star Game starters, including the two team captains, were named today (Jan. 26) during TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by CarMax. 

James and Antetokounmpo each received the most votes during NBA All-Star Voting presented by AT&T..

They will now get to draft their squads for Team LeBron and Team Giannis, irregardless of conference, from starters and also reserves to be selected by NBA head coaches and revealed Feb. 2 during TNT NBA Tip-Off.

The NBA said TNT would air the 2023 NBA All-Star Draft as a new, live pre-game segment for the first time just prior to the All-Star Game on Feb. 17.

Fans account for 50% of the vote to determine the starters for the 2023 NBA All-Star Game. Current NBA players and a media panel account for 25% each.

Starters from Eastern Conference teams also include: Kyrie Irving, Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum and Kevin Durant.

Starters from Western Conference teams also include: Nikola Jokic, Zion Williamson, Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic.

UPDATED January 19, 2023: Los Angeles Lakers F LeBron James continues to lead voting in the Western Conference and overall voting among all players, but Milwaukee Bucks F Giannis Antetokounmpo has taken over the lead in the Eastern Conference from Kevin Durant in the final fan ballot update for the NBA All-Star Voting presented by AT&T.

James is the only player with six million fan votes (6,506,682), followed by Antetokounmpo (5,970,196) and Durant of the Brooklyn Nets (5,838,182).

The Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry (West Guards, 5,151,822) and the Nets’ Kyrie Irving (East Guards, 3,968,041) remain the leaders at their respective position groups.

In Western Conference “Frontcourt” voting, James is followed by Nikola Jokić (Denver Nuggets,4,718,218), Anthony Davis (Lakers, 3,838,171), Zion Williamson (New Orleans Pelicans, 3,760,732) and Andrew Wiggins (Warriors, 2,158,855).

In Western Conference Guard voting, Curry is followed by Luka Dončić (Dallas Mavericks, 4,905,655), Ja Morant (Memphis Grizzlies,1,921,276), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder, 1,843,469) and Klay Thompson (Warriors, 1,222,843).

In Eastern Conference “Frontcourt” voting, Antetokounmpo and Durant are followed by Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics, 4,521,414), Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers,4,318,935)  and Jimmy Butler (Miami Heat, 954,799).

In Eastern Conference Guard voting, Irving is followed by Donovan Mitchell (Cleveland Cavaliers,3,851,233), Jaylen Brown (Celtics, 2,097,700), James Harden (76ers, 1.991,721) and Trae Young (Atlanta Hawks, 1,479,336).

NBA All-Star Voting presented by AT&T will conclude Jan. 21 (11:59 PM ET).

TNT will reveal the NBA All-Star Game starters, including the two team captains, Jan. 26 during TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by CarMax.  The team captains will be the All-Star starter from each conference who receives the most fan votes in his conference.

TNT will name the reserves, as selected by NBA head coaches, Feb. 2 during TNT NBA Tip-Off.

The 72nd NBA All-Star Game is scheduled for Feb. 19 in Vivint Arena, Salt Lake City, on TNT (8 PM ET) in the U.S. and reaching fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 50 languages.

UPDATED January 12, 2023:  Los Angeles Lakers F LeBron James and Brooklyn Nets F Kevin Durant continue to lead the Western and Eastern Conferences, respectively, in the second fan returns of NBA All-Star Voting presented by AT&T.

James (West Frontcourt), Durant (East Frontcourt), the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry (West Guards) and the Nets’ Kyrie Irving (East Guards) remain the leaders at their respective position groups.

James, with 4,825,299 votes; Durant, with 4,509,238 votes; and Giannis Antetokounmpo (4,467,306) were the only three players in the second-released results to top four million votes each.

Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors still leads all Western Conference guards (3,901,808) and Kyrie Irving of the Nets continues to lead Eastern Conference guards (3,024,833 votes).

In Western Conference “Frontcourt” voting, James is followed by Nikola Jokić (Denver Nuggets,3,441,893), Anthony Davis (Lakers,2,950,563), Zion Williamson (New Orleans Pelicans, 2,856,121) and Andrew Wiggins (Warriors, 1,613,100).

James, with 3.168,694 votes, and Durant, with 3.118,545 votes, were the only two players in the first-released results to top three million votes each.

Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors leads all Western Conference guards (2,715,520) and Kyrie Irving of the Nets leads all Eastern Conference guards ((2.071,715 votes).

The public-at-large accounts for 50% of the vote to determine the starters for the 2023 NBA All-Star Game.

Current NBA players and a media panel account for 25% each.

At-large voting concludes on Jan. 21 (11:59 PM ET).
