LeBron, 'Melo, Durant, Curry Among Finalists For USA Hoops Olympics Team

By Barry Janoff

Janaury 18, 2016: The 1996 USA Men's Basketball Team that won gold in the Summer Olympics in Barcelona was comprised of players so great — including Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley and Karl Malone — it was forever labeled the "Dream Team."

The squad being compiled for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro is seeking to make dreams of its own.

USA Basketball said today (Jan. 18) it has narrowed down the number of players to 30, all aiming for a shot on the official 12-member 2016 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team roster, which will be unveiled later this year.

The finalists are led by LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks), both of whom have won three Olympic hoops medals (2004 bronze and 2008 and 2012 gold) and who are attempting to make an historical fourth U.S. Olympic men’s team.

The 30 finalists feature 18 players who have collected 29 Olympic or FIBA Basketball World Cup gold medals and six bronze medals, including nine players from the gold medal winning 2012 U.S. Olympic team that went 8-0 in London.

Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers) is a two-time Olympic gold medalist (2008 and 2012) seeking to become one of just for four three-time U.S. Olympic medal-winning players (Anthony, James and David Robinson).

The final roster will be compiled in time to compete in exhibition games prior to the Summer Games, as will the USA National Team’s complete training schedule.

Missing from the roster is Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers), who is in his final NBA season has has declared his intention not to compete for a spot.

"I think it's the young guys' turn to go and play and perform," Bryant, 37, said regarding his decision.

Deron Williams and Tyson Chandler also were on the 2012 Olympic Team but are not among the 30 finalists this year.

“This selection process was difficult from the start, and obviously it is only going to get more difficult as we look to get to the official, 12-man roster,” Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the USA Men's Basketball Team (and Duke University), said in a statement. “I’m excited about the possibilities this team has."

Earlier this year, USA Basketball said that Krzyzewski would retired from his head coach position following he 2016 Summer Games and would be replaced by Gregg Popovich, head coach for the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, beginning with the team's 2017 training camp, and then in the 2019 FIBA World Cup and 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo (should the team qualify).

Krzyzewski has coached USA National teams to a 52-1 record in official FIBA or FIBA Americas competitions since 2006, including gold medal finishes at the 2014 FIBA World Cup, 2012 London Olympics, 2010 FIBA World Championship, 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2007 FIBA Americas Championship.

In addition to James, Anthony and Paul, the six players from the gold medal winning 2012 U.S. Olympic team among the finalists for 2016 are Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans), Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder), James Harden (Houston Rockets), Andre Iguodala (Golden State Warriors), Kevin Love (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder).

Dwight Howard (Houston Rockets) was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team along with Anthony, James and Paul, but was not on the 2012 roster due to back surgery.

“It seems like I say this each time we have to narrow down a roster, but I am struck by the remarkable commitment the players in the USA Basketball National Team program continue to display and the enthusiasm they have for representing their country,” Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball chairman, who has served as the managing director of the USA Men’s National Team since 2005, said in a statement.

“The depth of talent that exists in the national team program is extraordinary. Repeating as gold medalists at the 2016 Olympics will not be easy, but we feel confident that we have 30 finalists who offer amazing basketball abilities and special versatility," said Colangelo.

"As has been the case with past USA Basketball teams, the goal once again is to select the very best team possible to represent the United States.”

Among those seeking their first spot on an Olympic team roster are MBA MVP Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), LaMarcus Aldridge (San Antonio Spurs), Harrison Barnes (Golden State Warriors), Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards), Jimmy Butler (Chicago Bulls); Mike Conley (Memphis Grizzlies) DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings), Paul George (Indiana Pacers), Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors), Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers), Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers), DeAndre Jordan (Los Angeles Clippers), Kawhi Leonard (San Antonio Spurs), Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors) and John Wall (Washington Wizards).

“Obviously selecting the official roster of 12 players for the Olympics in 2016 will be a very, very difficult process," said Colangelo. "As has been the case with past USA Basketball teams, the goal once again is to select the very best team possible to represent the United States.”

Men’s basketball preliminary play at the ’16 Olympics will be Aug. 6-15, with the quarterfinals scheduled for Aug. 17, semifinals on Aug. 19 and the gold and bronze medal games on Aug. 21.
