LeBron James, Maverick Carter Producing ‘Expansive’ NBA Project For Showtime

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

June 29, 2017: LeBron James certainly produces results on the court for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

But he also is becoming more of an impact producer in Hollywood and the entertainment industry.

One major example is SpringHill Entertainment, founded by James and his partner, Maverick Carter, in 2008 with the desired goal to "create compelling stories for television, features and digital . . . incubating, developing and production work that speaks to a cross-cultural audience."

Among the productions have been for TV Survivor’s Remorse (Starz), Cleveland Hustles (CNBC), Becoming LeBron James (Disney XD) and The Wall (NBC); documentaries More Than A Game (2009) and I Am Giant: Victor Cruz (2015) and on the Web the animated series The LeBrons (pictured) and Uninterrupted, a platform for athletes and entertainers to share creative projects.

Next up, SpringHill Entertainment this week signed a deal with Showtime Networks to create an "expansive project" that would examine the "modern history of the NBA and the league’s impact on global popular culture.”

Working with award-winning filmmaker Gotham Chopra, production has started on the three-part documentary film series, scheduled to premier on Showtime in 2018.

According to Carter, "We developed the idea for these films because of the incredible, generational impact some of the NBA’s most successful players have had on every aspect of American culture.

"Gotham is the perfect filmmaker to bring these stories to life, and Showtime is the right platform to showcase how they were able to transcend the game and shape the culture in an unprecedented way."

Although it was not specified, at some point, James would have to turn the camera on himself as he has been part of NBA history for more than a decade.

"We are thrilled to be collaborating with LeBron, Maverick and Gotham on what will be a comprehensive look at one of the most influential sports institutions in the world," Stephen Espinoza, evp and GM for Showtime Sports, said in a statement.

"This series of films will join a growing list of must-see documentaries on Showtime, films that reveal the myriad ways sports and culture intersect and influence each other.”

Chopra is no stranger to working with sports superstars. Among his credits,he directed Kobe Bryant’s Muse (2015) as well as I Am Giant (for SpringHill) and David Ortiz: The Last Walk Off (2016).

"Despite the fact that I am a Boston Celtics fan to the bone, collaborating with Maverick and LeBron was an inspired opportunity," Chopra said in a statement.

"Sports in general and specifically the NBA provide a great backdrop for storytelling. But these films offer us a chance to go beyond that; to weave a broader cultural narrative in our current social climate . . . we have a chance to say something truly resonant. That’s the goal," said Chopra.
