Lego Women Of NASA Set ‘Celebrates Great Achievements, Inspires All Children’

By Barry Janoff

October 18, 2017: The 2016 movie Hidden Figures told the story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, three African-American mathematicians whose work at NASA was vital in getting America’s space program off the ground in the 1960s.

The Lego Group has unveiled its own homage, appropriately called the Women of NASA, a 231-piece set that includes four mini-figures of ground-breaking and inspirational women: Nancy Grace Roman, Margaret Hamilton, Sally Ride and Mae Jemison.

The set is scheduled to hit retail Nov. 1.

According to the company, the basis for Women of NASA was launched by science editor and writer and fan designer Maia Weinstock, who presented her idea to the Lego Ideas crowd-sourcing platform.

“It gained lots of support from other fans and was selected for production for its inspirational value as well as build and play experience,” according to Lego.

Lego said the original proposal featured five NASA women — the four women who are in the final design plus Katherine Johnson, “who chose not to be part of the set.”

“In all realms of science, engineering, and technology, pioneering women have historically been under appreciated for their often groundbreaking work,” Weinstock said in a statement. "We have also seen that when girls and women are given more encouragement in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, math), they become more likely to pursue careers in these areas.

“With this project, I wanted to spotlight a fantastic group of women who have made seminal contributions to NASA history. My dream would be to know that the first human on Mars — or an engineer or computer scientist who helped her get there — played with the Lego Women of NASA as a child and was inspired to pursue a STEM career as a result,” said Weinstock.

L to R: Nancy Grace Roman, Margaret Hamilton, Sally Ride, Mae JemisonIn the set, according to Lego, astronomer and teacher Nancy Grace Roman, now 92, is molded as her 1959 likeness. Her building accessories feature a posable Hubble Space Telescope with authentic details and a projected image of a planetary nebula.

The build for computer scientist and systems engineer Margaret Hamilton, now 81, features a stack of book elements, representing the books of listings of Apollo Guidance Computer onboard flight software source code.

Astronaut and physicist Sally Ride, who passed away in 2012, is shown in a 1983-era training flight suit.

Astronaut Mae Jemison, a physician and engineer, wears a 1992-era space shuttle flight suit.

Both Ride and Jemison’s build features a launch pad and Space Shuttle Challenger with three removable rocket stages.

According to Lego design manager Tara Wike, who worked on the final design of the mini-figures and set with Gemma Anderson, “It was a great experience to give these amazing women their new Lego identity and a great honor to personally present Margaret Hamilton with her very own mini-figure.

“What they have achieved is truly inspiring to me, and I hope it will inspire children to make their dreams come true," said Wike.

“What they have achieved is truly inspiring to me, and I hope it will inspire children to make their dreams come true.”

In conjunction with the release of Women of NASA, Lego said, “To celebrate great achievement and inspire all children to become what they most dream of, a challenge titled Breaking Boundaries will soon be launching on Lego Life — a safe social network for children under the age of 13.”

Lego will ask children to build their dream job and share their creation on Lego Life using the four role models to remind all that the sky does not need to be the limit.

Lego said that in advance of the Nov. 1 release, Women of NASA would be available for purchase on Oct. 28 when Maia Weinstock hosts a signing event in the New York Flatiron District Lego Store.
