London 2012, Partners Hit 1,000-Day Countdown

BT hot air balloon over Trafalgar Square celebrates 1,000 days until London 2012.
October 30, 2009: Hilton, Coke, McDonald's, Anheuser-Busch and other U.S. Olympic Committee partners will take over Rockefeller Center in New York on Nov. 4 for an event to commemorate "100 Days Out" until the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.
On Oct. 31, London 2012 starts its own countdown: 1,000 days until the Summer Games Opening Ceremonies on July 27, 2012 (with the Olympics running through Aug. 12). The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games said many of its marketing partners are activating around the milestone, which is intended to drive attention to the Games themselves and awareness for the ongoing efforts leading up to the event.
Among the activations, telecom partner BT is sponsoring an Olympic-themed photographic exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, launching a hot air balloon over Trafalgar Square and hosting a massive fireworks display over London originating at the BT Tower; British Airways flights will welcome passengers to London with a "1,000 days to go" message; adidas has unveiled a limited-edition line of T-shirts; and the first London 2012 licensed toy goes on sale in Hamley’s, a Corgi-made replica London bus, as well as the Royal Mail’s first set of London 2012 stamps.
LOCOG partners BT, Lloyds and the Olympic Lottery also have launched an initiative asking people what they plan to accomplish over the next 1,000 days, with the campaign running on Twitter and the London 2012 Web site. Among the early responses: "I'll be trying to earn a spot to compete in the 2012 Olympics," "I'd like to sign a contract to become a professional musician," "I will be part of an expedition to the North Pole be back in London" and "I would somehow like to meet Michael Phelps and marry him."
"The London Games are inspiring people across the globe through sport, and in the next 1,000 days, the IOC will continue to work closely with the organisers to ensure that the inspiration continues, as we all prepare for spectacular Games in 2012," International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said in a statement.

“There is still a long hard slog ahead but during this precious time we must pull out all the stops and use this amazing project to inspire many more," London mayor Boris Johnson said in a statement. "Whether it is taking up sport, learning new skills or volunteering at the Games this is the time when we can change the lives of a generation."
