London 2012 Nears $1B In Finances From Marketing Partners

November 26, 2009: The London 2012 Organizing Committee received a seal of approval from the International Olympic Committee's Coordination Commission during the latest meeting between the two groups. LOGOC also revealed that it nearing the $1 billion mark in finances via sponsorships and marketing partners.

According to LOCOG chairman Sebastian Coe, "We have been incredibly busy in the last seven months. We have brought nine new sponsors to the table and have now raised a total of nearly [$985.1 million U.S.]."

London 2012's Tier One top level partners are adidias. BP, British Airways, BT, BMW, EDF Energy and Lloyds TSB. BMW signed on last week.

London 2012 said it would be launching sign up for ticketing in spring 2010, enabling registered supporters the opportunity to be the first to receive ticketing news and information. Some 7.7 million tickets will be available for the Olympic Games, with another 1.5 million for the Paralympic Games. The 2012 Olympics take place July 27-Aug. 14, 2012.

"Once again, we have had very productive meetings with our partners at London 2012 and we are very positive about the progress that they are making in preparing for the Games," IOC coordination commission chairman Denis Oswald said in a statement on Nov. 26. 'It is over a year since the Beijing Games came to a close, and LOCOG has clearly been able to learn from its experiences last year and integrate them into planning for 2012. This was evident from the good discussions and sharing of information that we had around a number of topics.'

Coe also said that the organizers "have made significant progress across all our operation planning, from sports schedules and test events to our ticking and volunteer programs and the detailed venue and city operations. We are delighted that the IOC — which, after all, is the expert in staging the Games — is pleased with our progress and we look forward to demonstrating the continued progress when the Commission visits again next year."
