Loot Crate Brings The Heat To MLB With Launch Of Sports Crate Collectibles

By Barry Janoff

March 15, 2017: With the 2017 baseball season just weeks away, MLB has found a way to bring the game and its players right to the homes of fans, including Jon Lester, Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw and Madison Bumgarner.

MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Assn. have signed a deal with Loot Crate, which delivers monthly packages of unique goodies and memorabilia to subscribers via aliances with Marvel, Cartoon Network, Overwatch and others — often timed to the release of new movies, video games or other high-profile events — naming its new Sports Crate line as the exclusive licensed subscription box of MLB.

The alliance was unveiled during the Toy Fair in New York last month, but was shared in detail this week by Loot Crate and MLB.

This is the second sports-themed alliance for Los Angeles-based Loot Crate, which has a monthly Slam Crate via a deal with WWE, which began this past October.

Sports Crate will launch this month with ten MLB teams and add more teams later this year.

According to Los Angeles-based Loot Crate, "Think of us as your own personal equipment manager, except we won’t wash your sweat stains. But we will send you five-to-seven team-specific items every month that you can’t get anywhere else. Gear, collectibles and a whole lot more."

Loot Crate said that the premiere Sports Crate would have a "Bringing the Heat" theme, including a "highly collectible, exclusive action figure of the respective team's starting pitcher, along with everything a fan needs to 'bring it' on Opening Day."

Each subsequent box will have its own theme, potentially including BBQ and Road Warrior.

The initial Sports Crate for respective teams includes an action figure of:

• Rick Porcello Boston Red Sox
• Jon Lester Chicago Cubs (pictured)
• Justin Verlander Detroit Tigers
• Danny Duffy Kansas City Royals
• Clayton Kershaw Los Angeles Dodgers
• Noah Syndergaard New York Mets
• Masahiro Tanaka New York Yankees
• Madison Bumgarner San Francisco Giants
• Adam Wainwright St. Louis Cardinals
• Cole Hamels Texas Rangers

In addition, Loot Crate said its Sports Crates would contain “VIP one-of-the-kind experiences (such as) attending a Boston Red Sox game" in Fenway Park.

"Sports Crate, and the fans it will serve, is an exciting step for our company as we explore new and exciting ways to celebrate being a fan, no matter what you're passionate about," Chris Davis, CEO for Loot Crate, which was founded in 2012, said in a statement.

"Sports Crate is like getting a care package from your favorite team every month, and we are humbled by the opportunity to share in that experience for sports fans worldwide," said Davis.

Subscriptions start at $39.99 (including shipping). Loot Crate said it has two payment options: monthly and season-long. (Details here.)

The company said the advantage to a season pass is a discount in price "and an additional figure. Plus, there may be more benefits to be announced!"

Loot Crate said it has more than 650,000 subscribers — affectionately referred to as "Looters" — which is up from about 600,000 in mid-2016.

Loot Crate partnerships also include Nickelodeon, Halo, Minecraft, Harry Potter, Mass Effect, Fallout and Sanrio.
