EA Sports' 'Madden NFL 25' Vote Down To Final Four For Silver Anniversary Cover

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

April 12, 2013: If you are still having post-Final Four withdrawal symptoms, EA Sports may be able to offer some assistance.

The video game company said that Madden NFL 25 cover voting has moved to the semifinal round, with the original field of 64 participants — 32 current NFL stars and 32 former legends — coming down to the last four.

In the "new school" bracket, Minnesota Vikings running back and NFL MVP Adrian Peterson takes on Houston Texans running back Arian Foster. In the legends bracket, former Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders faces ex-San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice.

Sanders (57%) defeated Joe Montana (43%), Rice (60%) outlasted Deion Sanders (40%), Foster (52%) edged Russell Wilson (48%) and Peterson (70%) ran over Robert Griffin III (30%).

The two winners will meet in the final vote for the cover position of Madden NFL 25. (Voting details here.)

Voting totals for the campaign so far have exceeded 37 million, 18 million more than last year’s vote total for the entire campaign, according to EA Sports.

Voting for the semifinal round is now open through April 17.

In addition, people can “Maximize” their vote by participating in live Twitter voting, sponsored in partnership with Pepsi MAX, on April 16.

The two finalists will be unveiled on April 17 during ESPN’s SportsNation. Finals voting gill take place April 17-24, with the winner to be named during ESPN’s SportsNation on April 24.

The competition is being run in association with the NFL Players Assn.

This is the third year that EA Sports has enabled consumers to vote for the cover athlete.

EA said the name Madden NFL 25 rather than Madden NFL 14, which would have been next in the line of succession, was chosen in celebration of the franchise’s silver anniversary. The game is scheduled to hit retail on Aug. 27.

Marketing support will include TV, print, in-store, Internet and such social media destinations as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

“The Madden NFL 25 cover vote is the perfect marriage between two strong brands coming together to put fans in control of what they’re most passionate about and giving them a platform for their voices to be heard,” Brian Dailey, director of games and partnerships for ESPN, said in a statement. “Engagement has been strong in our last two Madden cover votes, accounting for some of ESPN’s most successful social activations to date, and we anticipate that to continue with the 25th anniversary.”
