Patrick Mahomes Joins Aaron Rodgers In State Farm Campaign As 'Mahomies'

By Barry Janoff

September 5, 2019: Patrick Mahomes may get sacked on the field, but he’s now safe on the road and at home thanks to a deal with State Farm.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and 2018 NFL MVP has joined the insurance company’s roster and appears in a new multi-media campaign alongside State Farm veteran endorser Aaron Rodgers, quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.

The effort, with also includes digital and social media, breaks to coincide with the start of the NFL’s 100 season, which begins tonight when Rodgers and the Packers visit the Chicago Bears.

Terms of the deal with Mahomes were not released.

The humorous effort is anchored by two 30-second spots with Rodgers and Mahomes, who are satisfied State Farm policy holders.

The situation is much to the chagrin of Rodgers' faux “sports agent,” Gabe Gabriel, played by actor David Haydn-Jones (Supernatural), who appeared in a series of State Farm spots with Rodgers last season..

Gabriel’s issue remains that he has an anxiety issue about keeping pace with the things that State Farm agents accomplish for Rodgers, and now Mahomes.

Unlike an earlier State Farm campaign in which the NBA’s Chris Paul and James Harden were accompanied by a faux State Farm agent, Cole Perez, played by actor Oscar Nunez. this campaign features real-life State Farm agent Patrick Minnis.

Minnis also appeared with Rodgers and Haydn-Jones last season.

In “Tables Have Turned,” Rodgers walks into Gabriel’s office and is introduced to Gabe’s new client and new best “Mahomie,” Patrick Mahomes.

Gabriel is dismayed to find out that the two quarterbacks already are friend. He experiences more angst when Minnis also arrives. “Aaron takes his favorite agent everywhere,” Minnis says to Gabriel.

In “Gabe’s Worst Nightmare,” Gabriel dreams that he is in a football stadium filled with “19,000 State Farm agents” watching Rodgers and Mahomes playing for the State Farm team.

He describes the scene to Minnis and asks what it means.

“Clearly, you should combine your home and auto insurance with State Farm,” says Minnis.

The campaign also includes a standalone 30-second spot, “Floor It,” in which Rodgers is driving Gabriel and Minnis in a residential neighborhood, with Rodgers obeying the speed limit.

“The safer you drive, the more money you save,” says Minnis.

“Well, bad news, State Farm,” says Gabriel. “Aaron doesn’t know how to play it safe.”

Gabriel turns up the radio, which is blasting “Breaking the Law” by Judas Priest, and goads Rodgers to “light it up” as he plays air drums in the front seat.

It turns out Rodgers does know how to play it safe and continues to obey the speed limit.

“Don’t mess with my discount,” Rodgers says to Gabriel before ejecting him from the car.

A 15-second spot, “I’ve Got An App,” shows Rodgers paying bills and tracking claims with the State Farm mobile app.

The campaign will run throughout the season across network and cable, with a focus on NFL and sports programming.

Additional spots will follow.

Rodgers' early work with State Farm saw him putting on a championship belt and doing the “Discount Double-Check” dance.

He also has previously appeared in State Farm ads with such NFL players as Clay Matthews and BJ Raj, former player and head coach Mike Ditka; and “Hans and Franz” and “Bill Swerski’s Superfans” (“Da Bears”), both from Saturday Night Live.

Mahomes is one of the most popular players in the NFL, with his jersey among the top-sellers.

According to e-ticket destination StubHub, led by Mahomes, demand for Kansas City Chiefs tickets is up 280% this season from 2018.

Mahomes recently signed a deal with P&G’s Head & Shoulders and also has deals including adidas, Hunt’s, Essentia Water, Oakley sunglasses and Hy-Vee supermarkets.

In addition, he is on the cover of Madden NFL 20.

State Farm last year added to its NFL presence by acquiring naming rights to the home venue for the Arizona Cardinals, as well as the home arena for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks.
