Mayweather Jr.: ‘I Was Blindsided’ About Arrangements For Japan MMA Deal

By Barry Janoff

November 7, 2018: On Monday, undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the center of attention during a press conference in Japan to unveil what was called a series of fights between Mayweather Jr. and MMA fighters.

The first bout in cooperation with Rizin Fighting Federation was said to be against Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa, scheduled for New Year’s Eve in the Saitama Super Arena.

Not so fast, Mayweather Jr. now says.

“Now that I am back on U.S. soil after a long and disappointing trip to Tokyo, I now have the time to address you, my fans and the media in regard to the upcoming event on December 31st that was recently announced,” Mayweather Jr. posted today to his official Instagram account.

“First and foremost, I want it to be clear that I, Floyd Mayweather, never agreed to an official bout with Tenshin Nasukawa. In fact (with all due respect) I have never heard of him until this recent trip to Japan.

“Ultimately, I was asked to participate in a 9 minute exhibition of 3 rounds with an opponent selected by the Rizin Fighting Federation. What I was originally informed of by Brent Johnson of One Entertainment was that this was to be an exhibition bout for a small group of wealthy spectators for a very large fee.”

Mayweather Jr. was looking at a potential $88 million-plus payday for the New Year’s Eve fight, according to industry analysts.

Mayweather Jr.’s promotion and deals here are being handled by One Entertainment, NY, which has represented Mayweather Jr. on other international deals, and also lists among its endeavors film, music, corporate and cause marketing activation.

Also at the press event were Johnson, managing partner and CEO for One Entertainment (pictured below); Nasukawa and Nobuyuki Sakakibara, businessman and president of Rizin Fighting Federation.

During the press conference, Johnson said, “Rizin and I sat down the last couple of week to come up with things that make sense for a long-term partnership and opportunities This fight, this deal will make sense as far as the money goes. There will be licensing, There will be other opportunities that we will explore. This is the Mayweather team coming together with Rizin.

“We have to make money on this for it to make sense,” Johnson said. "I’ve been taught that by the guy sitting next to me.”

“I couldn’t choose a better company than Rizin (to work with),” said Mayweather Jr. during the press conference. “Rizin has done a remarkable job with the fighters. My relationship with Rizin doesn’t stop here. I look forward to taking this worldwide.

“I want to continue to build my relationship with The Money Team Tokyo and bring other fighters here so my company can continue to grow. So Rizin can continue to grow. We look forward to taking the Mayweather banner and the TMT banner worldwide.”

Today, Mayweather Jr. offered another version.

“This exhibition was previously arranged as a ‘Special Bout’ purely for entertainment purposes with no intentions of being represented as an official fight card or televised worldwide.

“Once I arrived to the press conference, my team and I were completely derailed by the new direction this event was going and we should have put a stop to it immediately.”

Mayweather Jr. is now apologizing for not making that move.

“I want to sincerely apologize to my fans for the misleading information that was announced during this press conference and I can assure you that I too was completely blindsided by the arrangements that were being made without my consent or approval.

“For the sake of the several fans and attendees that flew in from all parts of the world to attend this past press conference, I was hesitant to create a huge disturbance by combating what was being said, and for that I am truly sorry.”

According to Mayweather Jr. “I am a retired boxer that earns an unprecedented amount of money, globally, for appearances, speaking engagements and occasional small exhibitions.”

Mayweather Jr. took home more than $250 million from his 2015 bout against Manny Pacquiao in 2015 and $300 million for his fight against MMA-turned-boxer Conor McGregor last year, according to industry analysts.

Mayweather Jr. has talked about a rematch in the ring with Pacquiao, as well as a rematch against McGregor but in the UFC Octagon.

Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao “accidentally” met in September during the Soca Weekend Music Festival in Tokyo, during which Mayweather Jr. boasted, “I’m coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao this year. Another nine figure payday on the way.”

Those plans were seemingly put on hold with Mayweather Jr.’s decision to instead fight Tenshin this year but now could be back on.
