Mayweather Making His Grand Return To MGM Grand, Marketers, Money To Follow

By Barry Janoff

March 6, 2014: Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. is returning to the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for his next fight, which is really no surprise.

The only question that might remain is whether or not the bout against Marcos “El Chino” Maidana, confirmed late last month, can top the financial windfall that Mayweather's previous registered.

Mayweather’s previous fight, a September 2013 victory over Canelo Alvarez, pulled in more than $20 million in gate receipts, a record for the MGM Grand.

In fact, Mayweather’s last five fights have been sellouts, according to Mayweather Promotions.

The Alvarez fight initially earned Mayweather a guaranteed $41.5 million, but that figure edged closer to — and could even have topped — the $100 million mark, according to industry analysts. The river of green was getting in-flow from Showtime PPV, the second in a six-fight deal between Mayweather and Showtime Networks Inc., which topped a record $150 million in revenue from 2.2 million PPV hits, according to Showtime.

“We are so delighted that Floyd will be fighting at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the 12th time,” Leonard Ellerbe, CEO for Mayweather Promotions, said in a statement to confirm that the Maidana bout would be at the MGM Grand. “It is truly Floyd’s home away from home and, as we always say, when Floyd fights at MGM Grand, it stands for ‘Mayweather Gets Money’ because of his ability to sell every seat in the house.”

The pre-Alvaarez fight promotional tour, under the auspices of Mayweather Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions (which handles Mayweather, Alvarez and Maidana) came with a group of marketing partners. They included Corona, Valvoline, AT&T, Nature Nutrition, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Fred Loya Insurance and the Mexican Tourism Board. Another pre-fight promotional tour for Mayweather-Maidana is in the works.

In addition, The Money Team, which among other responsibilities oversees the production and sale of Mayweather-related apparel, "Sold out of MTM Money Wear apparel and hats twice" at the MGM Grand Hotel during the Alvarez fight, according to Mayweather. T-shirts were selling for $35, hats for $70.

The ante is being upped for the May 3 fight, literally and figuratively. Both WBC Welterweight World Champion Mayweather 45-0, 26 KOs) and WBA Welterweight World Champion Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs) are putting their belts on the line in the unification match.

The scheduled 12-round world championship unification bout is being promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. It will be produced and distributed live by Showtime PPV, the third in a six-fight deal between Mayweather and Showtime Networks Inc.

The upcoming event will be the ninth consecutive time that Mayweather fights at MGM Grand and his 12th appearance overall. The MGM Grand displays "Mayweather Home of the Champion” banners on the exterior of the building

The only other known venue to put in a big bid was Barclays Center, home of the NBA's Brooklyn (NY) Nets.

"I will be fighting at the best place on Earth on May 3rd . . .  the MGM Grand," Mayweather wrote on his Twitter account. "Reserve your rooms at http://mgmgrand.com."

Mayweather was named one of the Top Ten Sports Marketers of the Year by NYSportsJournalism.

“When Floyd fights at the MGM Grand, it stands for ‘Mayweather Gets Money’ because of his ability to sell every seat in the house.”

“We are honored to host another one of Floyd Mayweather’s epic championship fights at MGM Grand,” Richard Sturm, president of Sports and Entertainment for MGM Resorts International, said in a statement. “The MGM Grand Garden Arena has been Floyd’s home for many years and he always thrills the fans inside the Arena and those watching worldwide.”

According to Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, “Floyd Mayweather will be coming home once again on May 3 when he faces Marcos Maidana at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. With 11 of his previous fights being held at MGM Grand, Floyd has become the venue's greatest sports franchise, so it is only fitting that he face one of his toughest challenges here in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas.”
