• The Professional Fighters League has formed a partnership with Mike Tyson, with the first initiative "Mike Tyson's New Fight Game: The PFL." Tyson will provide “fighter perspective, inside analysis, and irreverent discussion never before experienced in combat sports. The series debuts tonight (Oct. 10 10 PM ET) on PFL and Tyson digital and social platforms, including YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.

• Two-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, currently ranked No. 3 in the world, said she would represent Japan, where she holds a citizenship, in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

• NBC Sports Regional Networks has signed a partnership with Religion of Sports — the media company founded by Tom Brady, Michael Strahan and Gotham Chopra — to develop and produce "Head Strong: Mental Health and Sports," a “comprehensive multi-platform content initiative on mental health as well as men’s health issues.” The joint project will launch in November.

• Per NFL Media: Consumption figures through Week 5: More than 142 million people have watched NFL games. Viewership is up 6%. The entire list of Top 20 TV shows this season are NFL games.

The Top Three games to date all involve the Dallas Cowboys: Green Bay Packers vs. Dallas Cowboys (Fox, Oct 6) 24.6M; New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys (Fox, Sept. 8) 24.3M; Dallas Cowboys vs. New Orleans Saints (NBC, Sept. 29) 24.2M.

• PGA Tour Champions and Ascension signed a four-year partnership to host a new pro golf tournament in St. Louis. The Ascension Charity Classic will debut Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 2020 at Norwood Hills Country Club in North County. It will be the first time the PGA Tour has hosted an annual event in the St. Louis region since 2001.

• Zenni Optical, based in San Francisco, whose alliances include being an official partner with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and the NBA’s Chicago Bulls, has expanded its role with the Bulls, which features a five-year deal as the team’s jersey patch logo partner.

Zenni has unveiled its Off-Court Style collection, supported by Bulls members and brand ambassadors including Zach LaVine, Robin Lopez and Wendell Carter Jr. being outfitted with their “favorite Zenni frames and matching them with their off-court style to give fans an exclusive look at what they wear when they aren’t in uniform.

• Halloween this year is Oct. 31, and retailers, marketers and consumers are ready for another season of trick-or-treat. Total spend on Halloween 2019 is expected to reach $8.8 billion according to the National Retail Federation, Washington, DC. Full story here. 

• The Paley Center for Media, NY, will honor the 100th season of the NFL with a new exhibit: "A Century of Football: Celebrating the NFL’s 100th Season," free and open to the public (thru Oct. 27).

'Money' Says Mayweather Jr.-Pacquiao II Is En Route In ’18: Could It Top $400M?

September 15, 2018: Don’t call it a comeback, call it a possible $400 million sequel.

For those people who have been aching for a rematch of the Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr.-Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao fight of May 2, 2015, Mayweather Jr. himself says it is going to happen — this year.

Mayweather Jr. on Saturday (Sept. 15) posted this to his Instagram account:

“Floydmayweather I’m coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao this year. Another 9 figure pay day on the way @mayweatherpromotions.”

The text was accompanied by a short video showing the two fighters apparently running into each by accident other during the Soca Weekend Music Festival in Tokyo.

In the video, the two men are relatively playful, with Mayweather Jr. egging Pacquiao on about a fight, yelling “Easy money.”

Pacquiao points to his waist and says, “I have the belt,” a reference to his most recent fight, in July, when he defeated Lucas Matthysse to win a WBA welterweight title (and register his first knockout victory since 2009).

To which Mayweather Jr. replies, “The belt?! I’ll take if from you like I did before . . . (and) I don’t want to hear about your shoulder hurting,” referring to a reason Pacquiao gave following their fight in 2015 as to why he lost to Mayweather Jr.

In a separate video posted on Pacquiao’s Facebook page, Mayweather Jr. boasts about staging the rematch — tentatively scheduled for December, most likely in Las Vegas — saying, “Easy work. Easy work, baby. He don’t want it.  I’m coming back in December. We gonna get the payday. . . . December. I think I need to make that comeback.”

Pacquiao responded, “50-1. #No excuses.”

Like their first bout, the rematch, if and/or when it happens, is expected to come with lots of marketing and hype.

Lead sponsor for Mayweather Jr.-Pacquiao I was Tecate. Marketing partners also included the Mexican Tourism Board, Paramount Pictures and Smart Communications. Sponsorship revenue topped $13 million, according to analysts.

Multi-media support included TV, print, radio, Internet, social media and fighter activation.

The 39-year-old Pacquiao’s record is 60-7-2.

The 41-year-old undefeated Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) has fought twice since the Pacquiao meeting, defeating Andre Berto in 2015 and Conor McGregor in August 2017.
 
The 2015 Pacquiao-Mayweather Jr. fight, staged in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, was won by Mayweather Jr. via a unanimous decision.

That fight topped $400 million in gross revenue, according to industry analysts. Mayweather’s bout with MMA-specialist-turned-boxer McGregor topped $600 million.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather Jr. fight was on PPV, jointly produced by HBO and Showtime, the respective rights-holders of Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr., setting a PPV record of 4.6 million buys.

Mayweather Jr. came out of the fight about $200 million richer, Pacquiao about $120 million in the green.

Showtime Sports said its Showtime PPV presentation of Mayweather Jr.-McGregor in 2017 generated 4.3 million PPV buys in North America, the second largest PPV event of all time behind Mayweather Jr.-Pacquiao.

Mayweather Jr. took home at least an estimated $300 million, McGregor an estimated $100 million, according to industry analysts.

Mayweather Jr. has been busy recently promoting his chain of Mayweather Boxing + Fitness locations, which he plans to open nationwide and internationally.

Pacquiao is a leading political figure is his native Philippines and is said to be considering running for president in 2022.

Boxing itself has been on the upswing this year, with the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin middleweight bout in Las Vegas this weekend (Sept. 15) drawing major attention. (Editor's note: Won by Alavarez via majority decision.)

Recent major deals have included Perform Group signing an eight-year $1 billion alliance with Matchroom Boxing to show fights in the U.S. on Perform's DAZN live- and on-demand streaming platform; and ESPN extending its deal with Top Rank.
