McGregor’s Notorious Plan For UFC 229: Buy My Whiskey As Price Of Admission

By Barry Janoff

September 19, 2018: Conor McGregor wants people to attend his media conference in New York on Thursday, Sept. 20 in person, even if the UFC has other plans.

The media event, to be held in Radio City Music Hall, is a prelude to and a major part of the hype for McGregor’s UFC 229 lightweight bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov, scheduled for Oct. 6 in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The UFC, under the auspices of president Dana White, said that the McGregor-Nurmagomedov press conference, being presented by UFC partner AutoZone, would be limited to members of the media, UFC officials and other invited guests.

Radio City Music Hall holds nearly 6,000 people.

And McGregor wants his people there.

According to McGregor, via his official Twitter account, people can crash the party, with the price of admission being a bottle of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey, which McGregor endorses as founder, chairman and majority owner of Eire Born Spirits.

“The press conference will be open to the public,” McGregor posted on Twitter when he heard that the UFC said it would be closed to the public.

“The ticket for entry is a bottle of Proper Whiskey. 2 bottles and you skip the Q to the top.”

And to be sure his wishes are fulfilled:  “My soldiers will be outside making sure this rule is strictly adhered to.”

The UFC quickly moved to refute McGregor’s invitation.

“The press conference is not open to the public, it is for media only,” the UFC said in a statement. “We are directing all fans to Times Square where it will be shown for public viewing.”

The media conference, scheduled to begin at 5 PM (ET), will be shown live in Times Square on Silvercast's "Mega-Zilla" 78-foot x 330-foot outdoor screen (located on Broadway between 45th-46th Streets).

UFC is calling it “A viewing party unlike any other.” It will be captioned “so fans won’t miss a word,” also according to the UFC.

It also will be shown online.

Industry analysts are predicting upward of two million PPV buys for McGregor-Nurmagomedov. White said it could go as high as three million, calling it, “The biggest event in UFC history.”

The bout is McGregor’s first for the UFC since leaving the Octagon to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing ring on Aug. 26, 2017, also in T-Mobile Arena.

Press conferences leading up to that bout were as least as entertaining as the fight itself, with “The Notorious” McGregor in full f-bomb mode in confronting Mayweather Jr.

McGregor lost the fight via a 10th round KO, but walked away with upward of $100 million, a figure McGregor has not disputed.

Mayweather Jr. earned an estimated $300 million.

Nurmagomedov is 26-0, McGregor 21-3 (not including his Mayweather Jr. loss).

Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey launched this week in Ireland and the U.S., with further expansion in 2019.

Buying a bottle or two would not just be for the potential price of admission to the media event.

Eire Born Spirits said for every case sold it would donate $5 to local first-responder organizations/charities, up to $1 million annually.
