Miami Open Tennis Plans Swing To Football Territory In Hard Rock Stadium Move

By Barry Janoff

Deember 20, 2017: As home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and having hosted six Super Bowls, with a seventh to come in 2020 — as well as the University of Miami Hurricanes and the Capital One Orange Bowl — the venue now known as Hard Rock Stadium is most closely associated with football.

But tennis will become a big part of the stadium in 2019 with the relocation of the Miami Open presented by Itau.

The move was unveiled by IMG, which owns and operates the two-week event as part of its extensive roster of sports and entertainment events, in conjunction with Hard Rock Stadium executives.

The Miami Open has been played in Key Biscayne’s Crandon Park Tennis Center since 1985. The next and final event there is scheduled for March 19-April 1.

IMG said that it had “numerous offers to relocate to other cities (but was) committed to finding a solution that would keep the event in South Florida for the benefit of the community.”

IMG also said that it worked “closely with Dolphins and stadium majority owner Stephen Ross and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez to develop this reimagined event.”

The move would allow IMG, part of WME Endeavor, to “take the fan experience to unprecedented heights by incorporating the company’s network across music, fashion, culinary and art,” according to IMG.

Over the past few years, the stadium has undergone a $500 million, multi-year renovation privately funded by Ross.

“The Miami Open belongs in Miami,” Mark Shapiro, WME and IMG co-president, said in a statement. “We’re grateful to have amazing partners in Stephen, the Miami Dolphins organization, Mayor Gimenez and above all the people of Miami who have been supporting the Miami Open for decades.

“While we’re looking forward to creating the new Miami Open experience at Hard Rock Stadium, our priority is to make the last edition of the Key Biscayne event the best it’s ever been,” said Shapiro.

The Miami Open is one of nine ATP Masters 1000 Series events on the ATP calendar, and a Premier Mandatory event on the WTA calendar.

Itau is the largest Latin America privately owned bank. Host sponsors also include Advocate, Bacardi, Emirates, FedEx,Grey Goose, Lacoste, Moet & Chandon, Peugeot, Rolex and Stella Artois.

The move would be preceded by a tennis conversion in and around the stadium, including a new center court and a 14,000-seat stadium within Hard Rock Stadium.

Plans also include 30 show and practice courts, a sponsorship village, permanent retail facilities; and “improved Wi-Fi, media facilities, locker rooms and fitness space for players and tennis staff.”

The venue opened in 1987 as Joe Robbie Stadium and has been known by a number of names since, some via naming rights deals: Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, Land Shark Stadium and Sun Life Stadium.

Hard Rock acquired naming rights in 2016 in a deal valued at $250 million over 18 years, according to industry analysts.

"We numerous offers to relocate to other cities (but were) committed to finding a solution that would keep the event in South Florida."

According to Serena Williams, who is expected to resume her 23-time Grand Slam championship career in 2018 after giving birth this past September to a daughter, and is a resident of Florida, “The Miami Open has been a part of Miami’s culture for as long as I can remember and it’s a tournament that is very special to me and my family.

“I’ve enjoyed some of my best career moments in Miami thanks to the amazing tournament team and the supportive Miami fans. I am thrilled the Miami Open is staying in Miami, where it belongs.”

Williams is an eight-time Miami Open champ but did not play in 2017 due to a knee injury.

Defending 2017 champs are Roger Federer and Johanna Konta.

The stadium has hosted five Super Bowls (XXIII, XXIX, XXXIII, XLI and XLIV) and is scheduled to host Super Bowl LIV in 2020 and the College Football Playoff National Championship in 2021.
