• Octagon and the National Women’s Soccer League have signed a multi-tier consulting partnership, in which Octagon’s Global Media Rights Consulting and Marketing divisions will "advise the NWSL on its league media rights, sponsorship, and marketing." “The growth of the NWSL over the past six years has been tremendous, and the league, its teams and players show absolutely no sign of slowing down,” Christine Franklin, SVP, Marketing, Octagon, said via the firm.

• The Professional Baseball Agreement between MLB and minor league teams expires at the end of the 2020 season. • Halloween this year is Oct. 31, and retailers, marketers and consumers are ready for another season of trick-or-treat. Total spend on Halloween 2019 is expected to reach $8.8 billion according to the National Retail Federation, Washington, DC. Full story here.

Hispanic Push Helps MiLB Top Record $70.8M In Licensed Merchandise Sales

July 24, 2018: There is nothing minor about Minor League Baseball, especially when it comes to selling merchandise for such teams as the Columbia Fireflies, Durham Bulls, El Paso Chihuahuas, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, Sacramento River Cats and Trenton Thunder.

Minor League Baseball released its list of the Top 25 teams based on sales of licensed merchandise for 2017, and the combined totals of all 160 teams set a MiLB record with more than $70.8 million in retail sales.

The $70.8 million total marks a 3.6% increase over 2016's total of $68.3 million, which had been the highest total recorded since Minor League Baseball's licensing program began in 1992.

The 2017 figures is also up some $15 million over the $55.4 million in 2013.

MiLB said the numbers are based on total licensed merchandise sales from Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2017, and include the 160 teams that charge admission to their games.

Specific sales figures were not released.

"Minor League Baseball team names and logos continue to be among the most popular in all of professional sports and our teams have made promoting their brand a priority for their respective organizations," Brian Earle, COO for MiLB, said in a statement.

”The teams have done a tremendous job of using their team marks and logos to build an identity that is appealing to fans not just locally, but in some cases, globally as well."

In 2017, MiLB launched a national "It's Fun to Be a Fan" and corresponding Spanish-language Es Divertido Ser Un Fan marketing campaign.

Last season, three MiLB teams adopted new alternate on-field names to reflect their unique and diverse fan bases: Charlotte Knights to Caballeros, Las Vegas 51s to Reyes de Plata and Visalia Rawhide to Toros.

In 2018, MiLB unveiled caps, uniforms and marketing plans that 33 of its teams across 19 states will be undertaking during the season-long Copa de la Diversión campaign.

According to MiLB, some 18.3-million U.S. Hispanics designate themselves as fans of Minor League Baseball, behind only the NBA and MLS.

MiLB said that its licensing partners, led by New Era Cap, 47 Brand, Bimm Ridder, Majestic/Fanatics, Original Retro Brand, Outdoor Cap and Nike, “continue to support its growth through innovative designs that meet consumer demand.”

"The increase in popularity of Minor League Baseball logos, combined with high-quality product design and superior manufacturing capabilities of these licensees, has provided MiLB with a vehicle for current and future growth," said Earle.

Six teams have made the Top 25 list every year of their existence, or since the program began in 1993: the Fireflies (two years), Bulls (25 years),  Chihuahuas (four years), Iron Pigs (11 years), River Cats (18 years) and Thunder (24 years), according to MiLB.

Eight teams made the list in 2017 after not making the Top 25 in 2016: the Albuquerque Isotopes, Buffalo Bisons, Fort Wayne TinCaps, Hartford Yard Goats, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (known as the Suns prior to 2017), New Orleans Baby Cakes (rebranded in 2017 from the Zephyrs), Reading Fightin’ Phils and Rochester Red Wings.

Twenty-one different Major League organizations were represented by teams on the list, with the Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres placing two affiliates in the Top 25.

The South Bend Cubs were the only team to make the list using the nickname of their major league affiliate.
