MiLB Unveils National Diversity Pride Platform To Support LGBTQ Community

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

June 3, 2019:
Calling it the “largest documented Pride celebration in professional sports,” MiLB has unveiled the official launch of MiLB Pride, part of the organization's diversity and inclusion initiative.

Some 70 MiLB teams will host Pride LGBTQ-themed nights or events this season, incorporating Pride into scheduled promotions, providing discounted tickets to LGBTQ organizations and/or engaging with the LGBTQ community both in the ballpark and beyond.

A national platform includes teams forming partnerships with more than 150 local LGBTQ organizations.

"Minor League Baseball stadiums have always been and will continue to be safe and welcoming places for all  people,”  Pat O'Conner, president and CEO for MiLB, said via the organization.

“MiLB Pride is yet one more way we're showing our ongoing commitment to our fans and to diversity and inclusion within the game of baseball."

MiLB said MiLB Pride was “created in response to the growing number of MiLB teams' Pride events and a desire to further conversations about LGBTQ inclusion throughout baseball.”

This past February, MiLB became the first sports league to join the Association of National Advertisers' Alliance for Inclusive & Multicultural Marketing, which was “created to provide corporations with viable solutions for growth by targeting various thriving multicultural and inclusive market segments.”

In addition to the in-stadium events, some teams are giving back to their local communities by donating a portion of ticket sales to LGBTQ non-profit organizations in their area.

MiLB is also arranging educational workshops, networking opportunities and social event, “all designed to connect with the LGBTQ community and support the creation of a welcoming environment for LGBTQ fans, employees and partners in MiLB ballparks.”

Support includes a designated Web site, social media and MiLB Pride team merchandise such as T-shirts, caps, baseballs and accessories.

According to Vincent Pierson, director of diversity and inclusion for MiLB, ”Sports can bring people together and help transcend differences. MiLB Pride is putting the power of sports into action and building bridges to the LGBTQ community that didn't previously exist.

“Launching this program is a proud moment for the game of baseball and we look forward to building on this in the future."

Among MiLB's national partnerships are You Can Play — an organization that advocates for equality and respect for all who connect with sports, regardless of sexual orientation and/or gender identity — and the Pride Tape initiative, "a badge of support from teammates, coaches, parents and pros to young LGBTQ players and fans."

"You Can Play is grateful to be partnering with Minor League Baseball as it continues to serve as a model for diversity and inclusion," Brian Kitts, president of You Can Play, said via the group.

"We share a commitment to growing a great sport by making locker rooms and stadiums safe for every baseball player and fan, including those in the LGBTQ community"

MiLB said MilB Pride is the latest platform to join its Diversity Initiative programs, including Copa de la Diversión (Fun Cup) focusing on Hispanic communities, Women in Baseball and the FIELD Program.

FIELD (Fostering Inclusion through Education and Leadership Development) “combines educational and leadership development with skill specific training, access to a vast network of sports professionals and industry knowledge and exposure to create a unique experience for selected participants."
