Winter Olympics Going To The Dogs With Milk-Bone Athletes-Pups Campaign

Special to NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

January 5, 2018: J.M. Smucker has been an official sponsor with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams since 2013, activating with Smucker’s. Folgers, Jif,and Uncrustables brands in marketing.

For the 2018 Games, J.M. Smucker is adding Sahale Snacks and Milk-Bone, the latter to get support from athletes and their pups.

Among the ten athletes part of the overall J.M. Smucker effort, four will activate with Milk-Bone in multi-platform efforts to include their canines to show “how dogs support and comfort their owner athlete no matter the circumstance.”

Jessie Diggins (pictured, right), cross-country skier, with her spaniel, Brittany.

Hailey Langland (pictured, below), snowboarder, with her dog Denver.

• Maia and Alex Shibutani, ice dancing, with their dogs Lily and Po.

In its “Dogs Inspire More” campaign, unveiled today, Milk-Bone invites people to share their own dogs' supportive and inspirational stories by using #DogsInspireMore on their social channels.

People can also submit photos of their own #TeamUSAPups for the chance to win a Team USA and Milk-Bone prize.

Via Milk-Bone, according to Sean McCann, senior sports psychologist with the U.S. Olympic Committee, “There is a big body of work to show how dogs have such a positive impact on people: Decreased heart rate, better sleep, lower blood pressure . . . Every aspect of an athlete’s life is considered a performance factor and there is hardly any performance factor than being happy.”

According to Diggins, ”My dog Leo is really special to me because no matter how my training sessions go, he always comes running, looking for cuddles. While training for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, sometimes it can be hard to get out the door when I'm tired or sore, but Leo's excitement and energy inspires me to keep going.

“I’m excited to work with Milk-Bone to celebrate the steadfast support dogs give their owners."

"Everything is a performance factor for an athlete, and there's hardly any bigger factor than being happy," said McCann. "Directing attention to a companion gives an athlete a greater sense of purpose and makes a big difference with happiness. Dogs are funny, they make us laugh, and all these things are good for an athlete."

The six J.M. Smucker brands will "leverage a mix of marketing and communications elements to convey their support for Team USA,” including TV and digital advertising, custom packaging, retail promotions and athlete partnerships, according to J.M. Smucker.

Milk-Bone and sibling Meow Mix were not part of the company until a $3.2 billion acquisition of Big Heart Pet Brands in 2015.
