May 29, 2019: MLB and the Atlanta Braves said that the team’s home venue, now known as SunTrust Park, would be the site for the 2021 MLB All-Star Game and ancillary activities including the Home Run Derby.

Atlanta has hosted two previous All-Star Games but none since 2000 (in Turner Field).

SunTrust Bank and BB&T unveiled in February a merger plan, expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019, which would result in a new company name and new venue naming rights deal well before the All-Star Game.

"The 2021 Game will be the fifth one for the Braves (franchise) and the third one here in Atlanta," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said during a media event in SunTrust Park on Wednesday. "We've not been here since the year 2000, and it's about time that we're back."

Manfred said tha the Braves' bid was successful for really three reasons: "There was great commitment of all of the involved governmental entities . . . Secondly, there's no place in Major League Baseball where there's more buzz around a great young team than there is here in Atlanta.

“Last, and maybe most important for us, the facility here, including SunTrust Park and the Atlanta Battery, is the best in baseball. Hats off to chairman Terry McGuirk for the development here."

Among those in attendance were Braves executives, city Mayor Keisha Bottoms and franchise and MLB icon Hank Aaron.

The All-Star Game could generate close to $100 million in revenue for the city of Atlanta, according to team officials.

According to McGuirk, "Thank you, commissioner, for recognizing Atlanta and this project (SunTrust Park and adjacent The Battery retail and food complex) for its excellence by staging one of baseball's crown jewels here in 2021.”I think I'm most proud of how this event will show how unified Metro Atlanta really is.

"When we built SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta we envisioned our complex would be the perfect setting for an All-Star Game and we are thrilled to be able to showcase the ballpark, Cobb County and the City of Atlanta to the world,"

Others in attendance included former Braves players Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, Brian Jordan, Gary Matthews, Phil Niekro, Terry Pendleton, John Smotz and Dan Uggla, who will join Aaron as ambassadors for the All-Star Game.

The 2019 All-Star Game will take place in Cleveland in July. The 2020 All-Star Game is scheduled for Los Angeles. The 2026 All-Star Game will be played in Philadelphia to coincide with the 250th birthday of America.

Sites for the 2022-25 All-Star Games have not yet been decided.
