In Historic Move, MLB Aligns With The Washington Blade As ASG Week Sponsor

By Barry Janoff

June 3, 2018: MLB has signed a deal with the Washington (DC) Blade —  which lists itself as “America’s Top LGBT News Source Since 1969”  — to serve as a sponsor for 2018 MLB All-Star Week in Washington D.C. in July,

MLB said this marks the first time it has partnered with a LGBT news outlet on the event.

Among other activation, the Blade said in conjunction with All-Star Week, it would publish its sixth annual "Sports Edition" on July 13, “with a special focus on LGBTQ issues in baseball and other professional and collegiate sports.”

The Blade said it would work with MLB to promote and advertise the All-Star celebration events and will be credited as a sponsor during the week.

The 2018 MLB All-Star Game presented by MasterCard and related events will take place in Nationals Park and other locations throughout Washington.

“Everyone at the Blade is excited to work with Major League Baseball on this groundbreaking collaboration,” Kevin Naff, Blade editor, said in a statement.

“As LGBTQ visibility and acceptance continue to grow, we appreciate the efforts of MLB to foster an inclusive environment for players and fans.”

This season, 24 of MLB’s 30’s teams are hosting Pride nights, 22 of them in June, which has been designated as LGBT Pride month.

About a dozen of those teams have created Pride-specific merchandise, including hats and T-shirts.

MLB will also participate for the first time in the 2018 New York City Pride March (scheduled for June 24), along with contingents from the NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLS and the National Women’s Hockey League.

MLB sees the alliance with the Blade as a significant expansion of its position on inclusion.

“MLB is pleased to have the Washington Blade as one of the sponsors of our Midsummer Classic,” Billy Bean, vp and special assistant to the commissioner for MLB, told the Blade.

“Working together to promote many of the incredible events is another example of MLB’s inclusive message for all baseball fans. All-Star Week is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we are all looking forward to being in Washington D.C.”

A full roster of MLB partners already have or are ready to activate around the event, including the All-Star Ballot presented by Camping World, All-Star FanFest presented by Geico, SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, The Color Run MLB All-Star 5K pesented by Nike, Gatorade All-Star Workout Day and the T-Mobile Home Run Derby (ESPN, July 16).

The 2018 MLB All-Star Game presented by MasterCard is scheduled for July 17 (Fox).
