MLB Food Field Of Dreams: If You Cook Donut Sliders, Grasshoppers They Will Eat

By Barry Janoff

March 13, 2018: For a long time, the haphazard food experiences inside MLB ball parks were centered around hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn and Cracker Jack.

Now, food adventures inside MLB ball parks include the Cleveland Indians Flamethrower pulled pork sandwich, Detroit Tigers Chicken Shawarma Nachos, Oakland A’s Monte Khrush Davis Cristo sandwich (ham, turkey, cheese and strawberry preserves served between two Belgian Liege waffles), Tampa Bay Rays Reuben Cuban Sandwich and the Milwaukee Brewers Cheddar Beer Bratwurst.

To help people whet their appetites for the 2018 season, MLB said it plans to present its first MLB FoodFest, scheduled for April 21-22, to be held in Center415, located on Fifth Avenue (between 37th and 38th) in New York.

According to MLB, the FoodFest — with the theme ’30 Ballparks. 1 Plate” — features special selections from each of the 30 clubs served under one roof.

“This is not your average ballpark food,” MLB explains on the FoodFest Web site. “While we keep some of the fan favorites, each ballpark has picked an item they feel shows off the level of culinary experience you receive at their stadium.

“This includes sandwiches, nachos, burgers, chicken, fries, and more, all in a way you haven't seen before.”

According to MLB, each sample is about half the size of what you would receive in a ballpark.

The defending World Series champion Houston Astros will serve their Chicken Waffle Cone, which is popcorn chicken with mashed potatoes and honey mustard in a waffle cone.

Most unusual: Perhaps the Seattle Mariners Toasted Grasshoppers.

Also on the list of you don’t see that served at home: the Texas Rangers Chicken and Donut Slider (chicken between a glazed donut served with buffalo ranch and honey); Los Angeles Dodgers Cheeto-Lote (corn covered with chipotle mayo, parmesan, Tajin and Flaming Hot Cheetos); and the Atlanta Braves Pig Pickin’ (BBQ-spiced tortilla shell served with curly fries, mac-n-cheese, pulled pork, coleslaw and roasted cord pico de gallo with a side of fried pork rinds).

Every club designated one concession item to represent them at MLB FoodFest. Featured fare ranges from “ballpark classics to stadium-exclusive fan favorites to original menu items debuting this season.”

MLB FoodFest will cover two floors and more than 20,000 square feet. (The special event is open from 11 AM to 9 PM ET each day. Details here.)

People have two options for ticket purchases: Food for $25 or food and beer for $40.

MLB said the food-beer ticket includes three beer vouchers. (Anyone purchasing and using a food-beer ticket must be 21 or older. Details here.)

Each ticket includes one tasting-sized serving of all 30 ballpark food items. Soft drinks and water are complimentary.

(Tickets must be secured online prior to arrival at the venue. Each ticket grants access to the space for a designated two-hour block. Details here.)

In addition to the food available, MLB FoodFest will feature such interactive exhibits and art as the Hot Dog Room presented by Nathan’s Famous, the official hot dog of MLB; the Popcorn Pit; Clubhouse Bar serving craft and light beer selections from Anheuser-Busch (food-beer ticket required for beer; and a baseball-themed lounge in which to eat and drink.

People attending the event are being encouraged to post their experience and images on social media with the hash tag #MLBFoodFest.
