Consumers spent more than $2.4 billion on hot dogs in U.S. supermarkets.

Los Angeles residents consume more hot dogs than any other city (36 million-plus pounds), beating out New York and Philadelphia.

That and more data on National Hot Dog Day (July 18) and thanks to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Washington DC, the site of MLB’s All-Star Game and events this past week.

All-Star Game venue Nationals Park offers such hot dog goodies as the Ben's Chili Bowl half smoke topped with chili and unique dogs from Haute Dogs.

NHDSC estimates that baseball fans will consume more than 19 million hot dogs and 4.6 million sausages during the 2018 MLB season. The combined hot dog and sausage total could stretch the entire continental U.S.

“In a love affair that’s spanned decades, baseball and hot dogs remain inseparable,” Eric Mittenthal, president for the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, said in a statement.

“Year after year, hot dogs continue to hit it out of the park at the concession stand, even as teams innovate to offer more food choices and inventive creations. There’s simply no replacing the unshakable bond baseball and hot dogs share.”

The predicted 19 million is the same figure as in 2017 and down slightly from the 19.4 million in 2016, but up from 18.5 million in 2015.

In 2011, people ate 22.5 million hot dogs in MLB ball parks; in 2014, the number topped 21.3 million.  

Also from NHDSC, on July 4, people in America downed 150 million hot dogs, enough to stretch from D.C. to L.A. more than five times.

During peak hot dog season, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, people in America “typically consume 7 billion hot dogs. That’s 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that period.”

Leading food service firm Aramark said that baseball fans consume nearly four million hot dogs each season in the eight venues Aramark serves: Citi Field (New York Mets), Citizens Bank Park (Philadelphia Phillies), Coors Field (Colorado Rockies), Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox), Kauffman Stadium (Kansas City Royals), Minute Maid Park (Houston Astros), PNC Park and Rogers Centre) (Toronto Blue Jays).

Houston Astros fans ate nearly 25,000 hot dogs during 2017 World Series games in Minute Maid Park.

During “Dollar Dog Night” at Citizens Bank Park, Phillies fans eat about 28,000 Philly Franks.

The Fenway Frank is the most popular hot dog Aramark said it serves, with Red Sox fans consuming more than 700,000 Franks in Fenway Park each season.

Fans in Houston’s Minute Maid Park and Colorado’s Coors Field tie for eating the second highest amount of hot dogs during baseball season, with more than 500,000 hot dogs consumed annually in each.

And there is something to offer for hungry people who have a beef with traditional hot dogs.

Aramark said this season five of its partner ballparks were named to PETA’s 2018 Top 10 Most Vegan-Friendly Ballparks list.

People at Citi Field eat the most veggie dogs (9,000 last season), followed by fans at the Rogers Centre, who consumed 6,000 veggie dogs last season.

“Hot dogs are as synonymous with baseball as ‘Take Me out to the Ballgame’," Carl Mittleman, president of Aramark’s Sports and Entertainment Division, said in a statement. "Whether you prefer them fully loaded, vegetarian, or with the traditional fixings, hot dogs continue to be among the most popular foods to eat at a ball game,”

“Our chefs continue to elevate and innovate the ballpark staple, tapping in to local flavors, food trends and fan feedback, to ensure our menus offer the perfect hot dog for everyone.”

And don’t forget the vendors.

On average, Aramark hot dog “hawkers” walk 4-5 miles per game. Not an easy task: A fully loaded ballpark hot dog vendor's bin weighs 30 pounds.
