MLB Now Banks With Capital One As Official Partner, World Series Presenting Sponsor

By Barry Janoff

March 28, 2022: With its rescheduled 2022 Opening Day of April 7 fast approaching, MLB said today it has signed a multi-year deal naming Capital One as the league's “official bank and credit card partner” and the presenting sponsor of the World Series.

In addition, Capital One becomes an official partner of Minor League Baseball and Little League Baseball and Softball, and will have significant presence during such MLB jewel events as Jackie Robinson Day and the All-Star Game presented by MasterCard.

Financial terms of the pact were not shared, but were put at $125 million over five years by industry analysts.

Capital One replaces Bank of America, a MLB partner since 2004.

MasterCard, which has been an official MLB sponsor since 1997, remains a financial partner of MLB and MLB Advance Media.

The World Series was presented by YouTube TV in 2017-18-19.

Among its other sports alliances, Capital One is one of three NCAA corporate partners (AT&T, Coca-Cola) and currently has has a major presence during Men’s and Women’s March Madness and Final Four tournaments.

“We're thrilled to welcome Capital One to the baseball family," Noah Garden, MLB chief revenue officer, said via the league.

"As we've seen with so much of their previous work, Capital One knows how to tap into the passion of sports fans everywhere, and we can't wait to see that engagement throughout baseball."

Among the first activation, Capital One will commemorate the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier (April 15, 1947) by donating $1,000 to the Jackie Robinson Foundation for each "Capital One Walk-Off" (aka game-winning play) this year, committing to a minimum total donation of $250,000 for the 2022 season.

Capital One said it would work with MLB to extend the Capital One Impact Initiative, a “multi-year commitment to tackling the underlying issues that hamper progress and create disproportionate outcomes for communities of color.”

The Jackie Robinson Foundation administers one of the nation's premier scholarship and leadership development programs for minority college students.

The MLB alliance comes on the heels of the launch of Capital One Entertainment, through which eligible cardholders can reserve seats with both cash and rewards including sports events, concerts and theatrical performances.

Under the MLB pact, Capital One said new and existing eligible credit and debit Capital One cardholders would be able to redeem their rewards for tickets to MLB games for all 30 teams through Capital One Entertainment.

They will also be able to access a range of exclusive MLB-related benefits and experiences throughout the season, including All-Star Week (including the Capital One Play Ball Park), the post-season and the World Series presented by Capital One; as well as unique VIP experiences, such as private on-field sessions with MLB legends and access to batting practice access.

Discounts for the MLB Shop and MLB.TV are en route.

"Capital One's partnership with MLB is the latest example of our commitment to our customers, who are passionate about sports and the teams they support," Roger Ferguson, Capital One managing vp-sponsorship, said via the firm.

"Through this partnership, we look forward to teaming up with MLB to not only provide our customers with amazing benefits, but also to expand our company-wide commitment to promoting and celebrating diversity, inclusion and belonging, inspiring fans of our national pastime in the process."

Capital One’s alliances also include including the Capital One Cup program, men's and women's NCAA sports, the Capital One Orange Bowl, College Football Championship, Capital One's The Match and presenting sponsor of The ESPYs.
